ForumsWEPRSchools being too strict on certain things?

In my High-School, im a freshmen. I live in a town with like a 98% white majority, so theres no gang activity or nothing of that sort. Anyways, fights are constantly happening. Even if one guy was only fighting out of self defense. My school has this "0 tolerance" policy. Shouldn't people have a right to defend themselves in certain situations? A few years back I got suspended for pushing a person...its that ridiculous. My friends have even gotten detentions for speaking their mind.
(in a respectful way, of course)

So I want to know what some people's opinions are on the topic, and if you know of any places that also relate to the stupid policy.

Sometimes the strictness goes too far, and a zero tolerance policy is definitely not the answer. However, your school may feel that by punishing people even when they say they didn't do anything wrong, everyone will try that much harder to avoid trouble. I go to a strict school, too (not that strict, but...), so I assume that's their meaning. Still, suspensions only happen to the people that start fights at my school, so that sucks.

I don't like the schools policy on this issue. Children should be able to act in self defense in case of an emergency. What if the attacker pulled out a knife? Would you just let him stab you?

Exactly my point. Self defense is important, and I think it is especially important in this case because school fights are all too common. As long as the person acting in self defense only defends himself and does not seriously injure the provoker, then I see no problem.

As for speaking your mind, students should be able to speak their mind to s certain extent, but not as far as to insult the teachers in front of their face or intentionally say something to put another person down. Of course, when this comes to politics and other widely debated issues, students should be able to share their opinion on the matter in a respectful fashion.

It's amazing how schools have changed in the 9 years since I have graduated from high school.

That was borderline racist.

There's a difference between being racist and stating facts backed up by statistics: black people are more likely to be in gangs than white people.

You know how I know the statistics are right? The school I go to is 98% white, along with the town I live in. No gangs.

Somers, my school has a similar policy to yours, except you have to be hit twice before your self defense is validated. I don't see the point in that, because as soon as someone takes a jab at me and I can tell if it's serious or not, that person isn't going to stop. I have the right to protect myself from serious bodily harm by eliminating the threat as soon as possible by fighting back.

Everyone knows that stereotypes are true, but no one has the balls to admit it.

Defintely more and less restrictions. Just like an airport it just gets worse as it goes. (Unless protests which rarely ever see them large in the United States) Well if you see how more under aged stuff happens because parents either don't know how or what is happening to the child behind scenes, don't care, don't try hard enough to stop their child from something. Sometime the parents aren't good role models then the child just copy the parent. Not all though. The parents are also fault fo how kids act. Ok the comment was slightly rascist but I don't think that's the point of the story. Well when I was in grade school people were fighting because they didn't sit together at lunch. It's more of survival of the fitest. The people who can hold their mouth closed the longest but yet behind the scene tells his parents and complains to them if they do nothing then go to the principle, if that doesn't work than that person starts to purposly starts reolting unless he/she has the chance to leave the school. Trust me it gets better when you rise in your grade because people respect you more as you rise in grade.

Hmmmmm my school is very strict on hugging (isn't that weird?)

What grade are you in? In my junior high school they would ask you to stop holding hands with a person. Hugging wasn't too big, but I think they would have probably asked you to stop if it was a problem.

We don't have many fights, maybe once in a blue moon but there are a few kids at my school I seriously think are in some kind of "gang" or "crew" that do some kind of drug.

It's amazing how many people do drugs and just talk about it in the open. I could name a handful easily. I don't think my school has a strict enough punishment for drug possession, it is only a weeks suspension for having marijuana. However, it is also a weeks suspension for having aspirin.

I think that most schools I have attended have been pretty good though on most issues.

Wow. I really feel sorry for everyone who has super strict schools. My elementary school was all cool about dress codes and showing affection. However, once in middle school, the school I am going to is just plain crazy. You can't wear jeans?! What the flip is wrong with jeans?! The teachers and supervisors wear jeans! We also can't wait any shirts that aren't solid colors, can't have any logos on it at all, and other things.

Is that a private school? Seems like private schools are stricter than public a lot of the time.

My friend has had a long term relationship with a very nice girl and they seriously like to hug and he got suspended for it!

that's because hugging leads to drug abuse or at least thats what the school thinks

I think it's probably just that they don't want to have to deal with anyone saying a person violated them by hugging them. Of course most schools don't see this as a problem, but there are some that do.

First, I really wouldnt want to look like a wimp in front of a lot of people, secondly, i wanna kick some ass, not go run off and cry about it. The schools nationwide are all so messed up, and how can they not see all this nonsense??
