A 13 year old girl in 2003 was told to strip search down to her underwear because the administration thought she was carrying Ibuprofen on her. The administration did not call the parents, a police officer, or anyone. They told her to strip down to search her. The case has reached the Supreme Court of the US. They will soon decide whether or not schools can order strip searches.

So how much power should school administrators have?

Yes but they have to inform the parents or gurdians of the parents too. That's why it is going to the supreme court...

Since she was a minor her parents had to be informed before anyone other than an administrator questioned her. It was also a serious violation of her privacy to strip search her anyway, if they needed to check her for pills they should have called her mother or sister for it not a stranger school nurse or not!

School administrators should not have that much power, but I do believe they should be able to search your locker, book bag, turn your pockets inside out, etc. Those things aren't going to invade anyones privacy.

I definitely agree, heck my school brought in drug sniffing dogs today almost 50-60 people got pulled out of classes and such was there any need for strip searching now!? Also considering this poor girl was searched on the words of a fellow student ANOTHER 13 YEAR OLD GIRL, am i the only one who remember the jealousy that girls had for each other in those years!?

Man, the schools keep getting more messed up. First off, woah, that was WAY out of hand. If i was that chicks father, I would had of tooken some action because that is NOT okay. Awhile back, like some 9 year old got spanked for not sitting still on the bus by the driver!!?? Seriously? What the hell's wrong with people? Can anyone please tell me any reason any of those 2 things would even be the slightest reasonable!?

I was that little boys father i would've sued that bus driver and the school system right after i punched the lights out of that Mo-fo for touching my kid. I believe actual physical punishment should be administered by no one but the parents, unless in a private school as the parent actually signs a paper that says the certain disciplinary actions will be allowed by members of the staff.

Actually I'm pretty sure they passed some kind of law for public schools that for the children's safety they have to give up some freedoms to protect the school. So this might be the first glimpse of it in action.

I think they should draw the line at Lock/bag/pocket searches, leave the body searches to the police.

Also I feel the whole no tolerance policy for OTC drugs is kinda a stretch. If anything they should allow the parents to go to the school's office and leave OTC drugs, such as Ibuprofen or Advil, that the children could go to the office for if the need arises. Kids getting expelled for it is just ridiculous in my opinion.

I don't believe that school administrators should go farther than searching lockers and backpacks, perhaps pockets. Lockers are school property anyway, there's zero problem against that. Or there should be. But anything farther than that, I believe is rather undignified. Especially without consulting the parents, or even a police officer of a sort.
