Such a broad topic, but I would like to pose a problem: can we come up with a good definition of terrorism?
I think that would be very difficult. Once in my history class we were discussing the difference between revolutionaries and terrorists. We read about someone in a country who was doing things that could be affiliated with either. We had to decide whether the person was a terrorist or a revolutionary, and who we thought it was. In the end many people decided terrorist and it ended up being George Washington.
can we come up with a good definition of terrorism? This isn't isolated in a particular group of people, nor are all particular people in a certain group necessarily terrorist. But what makes someone a terrorist? Is it simply the fact that they terrorize? That seems too broad, though. Thoughts?
well, I would have to say, Terrorism is the use of scare tactics in pursuit of political aims.
to your second question, I read a book called the reluctant fundamentalist (contemporary fiction), and through it I learned that someone with extremist ideals and is willing to give up nothing to obtain their goals. That is what makes some one a terrorist, extremist ideals and straight forward action to obtain their goals.
It realy doesn't matter if they freak or not. everyone should be prepared for what could possibly happen. I personaly think that there will be another attack in the next few years.
My World History teacher told us that some of the extreme pacifistic people or something are trying to change the term terrorism to "People who cause accidents". How stupid is that?
islam is against terrorism. almost every muslim on the world thinks bin laden is bad, and I'm sure that not even one muslim likes the pirates that are stealing ships now.
Terrorism is subjective. The people we in the West label as terrorists think of themelevs as freedom fighters not criminals. During the troubles in Ireland, IRA captives went on hunger strikes because of the fact they were categorised as criminals not political prisoners.
Or we could just make things simple and say anyone who is brown and has a big bushy beard.
By that logic what makes George Bush different from all the terrorists seen on the news, or half of the IDF for that matter?
George Bush isn't a fundamentalist, as he is still bound by law.
According to Marx socialism come sfirst. As far as I know a pure communist society has never existed.
Well everyone starts off in a "communistic" belief but it gradually turns into socialism because as we know pure communism is really impossible because people are greedy for power. By the time the military takes over, it moves from socialism to militaristic dictatorship.
