Yea, i would probably say soccer because it's the number one sport in tons of European and Southern American and African countries, and not that unpopular in the U.S.
and regarding the whole stop calling it soccer, as the_manta said, I would prefer to call it football as well, given that it involves well.. the foot. I am clueless as to why we named american football so

Well it is a football sport. Sports called football are "Soccer", American Football, rugby, aussie Rules. They are all football its just that ruby and the Aussies have the good sense to come up with their own name
As most people in the united states or north america would think american football is popular. In canada hockey would probably be the most popular. In the U.S. in some towns all they care about is american football. In europe football (soccer to all north american) is the most popular.

1. The Oympics (obviously) 2. The FIFA chapionships (pretty sure that second i might have the wrong name though) 3. The superbowl
Number 4 is another soccer (football in europe) but it might be 3 and the superbowl might be 4th. Just need to add that soccer is iternationally the most popular sport in the world but it isnt the most popular in some countrys

Less so in South America but some of the European teams have big riots at games. England has managed to shake off some of the hooligan label there are quite a few football related gangs and fights do break out. but at the moment it is the Ultras in Rome that get the most attention cos they stab loads of people

eeerrr... The European Chamions league? again a very important event in football and the final is great too. Liverpool v Milan in 2005 springs to mind. I would put the FA cup pretty hight up as well.
