in my history class we just stared talking about Nuclear weapons and we all know that every one was afraid of them in the cold war but if no one is going to use them are they not just chunks of metal and they hold no real power any more.
To tell you the truth, I don't really think Nukes are 'good' for anything. I mean, they cause harm more then anything, and afterall we know if one country launched a nuke, everyone else would in a heartbeat. It's a fact.
Nukes, if anything, are the ultimate panic weapon/mortal threat. There really isn't any other use for one, as they aren't exactly precision weapons. . . .
Nukes will be the end of our world. I mean look at us, we are all heading towards World War Three, and this time, Nukes will play a major role.
Let's face it, the United States and Russia have been at war all along, just not in each other's face, they fight behind the scenes. They support other countries to revolt and hate the (US and or Russia) opposition.
But, the fact that the States and Russia are scared to flinch in the real threat. They are both waiting for the right moment to press the button. They both have thier fingers on the button, but won't push until they see it fit.
I will say that Nukes may end the world but it will not be the U.S. and Russia they are no longer red if it happens it will be the U.S. and China
Don't count out Russia so fast, why else do you think they attacked the states and proposed that if 'The US were to attack Iran in anyway shape or form' it would be considerd an attack on them.
They are still bitter and are still looking for a loophole to attack the US.
Nuclear weapons still pose a predominant stance in politics today. They have been ever since August 6th and 9th of 1945. More so than ever since the late 40's to the early 90's with the Cold War.
They will still continue to be important in politics for many years to come.
But to answer the question they are good for somethings. As far as giving a tacticle advatage in a crisis situation they are good. They can often be used to de-escalate a situation just by their presence and if they need to be launced, small warheads can be deployed to neutralize a threat without causing the mass destruction thay are so famed for.
Because of the sudden threat of War, and the US being a superpower, needs all of those weapons to fight against a constant threat.
By the way, the US started the mass production/stock-pileing the Nukes around the Cold War era, things were starting to get pretty heated up, so, everyone thought that Russia and the US were going to go at it with each other with Nukes.
Its intimidation. If you know another country has enough to destroy the world a couple times, no matter how many allies you have its still enough to deter full assaults. Politics is alive today because of nuclear weapons, otherwise we most likely would have had a few dozen wars within the last couple years. Using them is pointless, but the possibility...
