in my history class we just stared talking about Nuclear weapons and we all know that every one was afraid of them in the cold war but if no one is going to use them are they not just chunks of metal and they hold no real power any more.

Nuclear bombs are terrible and have in my opinion done only one good thing (ended the war in the pacific during WWII) however at this point in time with so many countries armed with nuclear weapons and the U.N. steadily declining in strength and importance it would be impossible to get rid of all the worlds nuclear weapons, and without deterants to use them (other nuclear weapons) say good bye to whatever countries that oppose them.

the cases for them could look pretty with some glitter

The whole point is that we have them just in case.

Exactly.

There is a specific term for what Flipski was talking about.

Mutual Assured Destruction

Basically, the Soviet Union and the US competed to build nukes so no country would gain an advantage and launch their nukes. If one country had way more nukes then the other, a nuclear attack would be justifiable. If both countries had massive stockpiles, both countries would then be annihilated which means that an attack would be a very bad idea.

Hydrogen bombs are deadly and they are far worse then atomic bombs.

Do we need nukes in this world? No. But if the world shall have nukes, we might as well have the most.

What are nukes good for?

Easy.

Killing.

'nuff said.

Atom bomb was the lead up to the hydrogen bomb, way more powerful. Nuclear weapons act as a preventive power, a deterrent of M.A.D. I can only hope that other countries care about the well being of humanity enough to not launch the weapons. In addition the scientific discoveries of the future will face the same test, as a race, humans have been diving deeper for scientific secrets. But at the same time we must realize that some good as come of understanding the atom. Nuclear power plants are a very efficient energy source these days, but fear is keeping people (particularly the US) from using them. Chernobyl is a thing of the past, safety is a lot better now, france has been using nuclear power for quite a long time.

Well the question shouldn't be are they good for anything. It is more what can they do and is it good or bad. Of course they are good for something. They blow the sh*t out of any place. Also they realy make somebody afraid of you. I'm not saying these are good things. I am saying that of course they are good for something.

yes they are. to kill people..

not saying thats a good thing, but they are good at doing that.

seriously though, nukes are like a security blanket for nations.. ie hypothetical, Russia has 4 nukes and China has 24. Think Russia will nuke China? Probably not... maybe in the future when we discover something that the nukes will help to better life with, for example needing to blow a hole in the asteriod belt to safely pass through, or some other futuristic scenario

and we all saw the movie "The Core" prime example of the life-saving ability haha..

Russia has probably a little more nukes than china, but technically what you are saying is true, because when 1 country launches a nuke at another country, there is still delay time in which the country could send one back.

we've already found a way nukes can help haven't you seen the documentary Armageddon where bruce willis drills into an asteroid and blows it up from the inside with a nuke?

China has 550 tactical nukes and 1500 regular warheads. Excluding warheads awaiting dismantlement and their reserve weaponry, Russia is believed to have around 18000 warheads, which could destroy the world 26 times over.

Yup so I was right, A little more nukes...

But that is really a lot of warheads... 18000, you don't even need that much, besides increasing your e-penor length, because thats all I can think that it is used for.

Ya like Kirby said, you can't nuke an organization that doesn't have a defined region, or definite location. Nukes work against Nations, but not against individual terrorists.

im sure at the rate we are going with tech, in the near future we will find a way to turn nukes from death bringers to life savers..
