So I was reading the news earlier, and I found this story
Basically, it says that an Ohio a teen is going to be suspended and not allowed to attend graduation if he attends prom at his girlfriends public school. Now, you guys are probably asking why. The answer is because his private fundamentalist Baptist school prohibits dancing, holding hands, and rock music. All of which are common at prom.
In another article that I read (sorry, can't find it again) it says that if he participates in sex or using alcohol during the prom he will be suspended.
So, what do you guys think about this? Do you agree? Disagree? Do you think that suspension is a fair punishment? Let's hear it.
Oh I was suspended for running the school's black market, were we took stuff from the lost and found and refurbished it and resold it at a reasonable price. THought it gradually got out of hand as my lackeys began stealing them outright, so I was in for a 4 day suspension. I went to Prom after 2 days of my suspension, and then served my other 2 days. >_>
But I don't think his punishment is just because of the fact that we as humans are allowed to interact with the opposite sex. I also find it appaling that he would choose to receive his education at a baptist school...
I think its fair cause it is the rules of his school.
His girlfriend goes to another school, which is public and not under any sort of religious affiliation. The school which he attends has no right whatsoever to say what he can and can't do at a different school's dance.
They said that if he participates in sex or uses alcohol he will be expelled.
They said if he did it at school, so it doesn't extend to his life outside the school.
The school which he attends has no right whatsoever to say what he can and can't do at a different school's dance.
I go to a Catholic school, and technically, as long as I go there, my rights are "suspended" because I chose it. They don't really make much of it, especially things like this, but still, choosing to go to a school that has "rules" like these was and is a choice, right?
The "rules" make sense if they take place on his school's campus. From there on whether or not he participates in the activities which are banned at his school is his choice or not.
Suspending the kid for going to prom at another school is like a cop saying "Well, technically the speed limit is 35 over in the next county, but I'm gonna ticket it for you anyways."
I wasn't defending the Baptist school, just making a point. Certainly it would be nearly impossible to enforce these rules outside campus, and I don't understand why anyone would try. My school more or less sets morals, not telling us we must but saying we should. To answer the topic question, I disagree with what takes place outside of school.
"Well, technically the speed limit is 35 over in the next county, but I'm gonna ticket it for you anyways."
On school campus, ya, sure the rules apply but off, that's BS. And that interferes with his rights. If the kid was in a detention center school with access to the outside world then his rights would be void, but in a school that anybody can sign up to go to, that's a no no.
I meant I agree it's ridiculous to enforce what happens outside school.
no not really, because when you are outside of school, you are representing your school as a student, so whatever you do, You will be held responsible for by your school.

In a way, you're right. But still, going to a school doesn't mean they are responsible for every action you do. Also, since most people might not know off-hand what school others go to, it would be hard to judge their school. I hold the morals of my school in high regard, but I don't think those who don't should be punished.
I think it's horrible that they think they have the right to do that to him just because he wants a good education. He pays his fees so as far as I'm concerned they have no right to punish him ofr things that happen out of school. Also, if you can't make laws around religion then wouldn't they get in legal shit for punishing him for "sins" he commits out of school?
