Right now, any human cloning isn't an option. We have an amazing fail rate for cloning in animals, let alone humans. I'm completely for looking into cloning, but we need to work out the kinks before we start making it more widely praticed
I don't think there's really a reason to clone a whole human being, other then being able to say 'we did it!'. The creation of replacement biological material is something I would find intruiging.
As for other animals; there could be advantages in cloning particularly genetically sound animals for breeding purposes in farming.
Cloning already has a place in science with regards to agriculture - I wish Greenpeace and like-minded organization would educate themselves and realize that GE crops are not evil. It's... pathetic.
i also think that cloning organs is a good idea, but cloning humans no matter what the purpose is a bad idea. what would happen if the clone was a distorted abomination? what would we do with it? we can't kill it, its a human being, not an experiment. but cloning humans successfully or not is a dark way to toy with nature. man creating man? it just doesn't sound right.
also cloning is like gene therapy, although cloning has higher chances of getting better results. both are new aspects of science that are difficult to work with and are rather "experimental." nothing can be guaranteed for either.
I believe cloning is fairly harmless, every clone would come out like twins and twins have perfectly normal lives. Cloning whole people wouldn't be very useful, what would be the point it would just increase the population and they may end up mentally scarred.

Fairly harmless? You would have to think about the problem about this. What if something goes wrong, the scientists mess up apart of the clones brain. It is good at first and then it becomes evil and destroys everything. What would happen after that, the scientists will stop cloning because of that reason.

there will be no thoughts in the brain to make the clone evil, you have been watching too much sci-fi videos, if anything it will make the clone mentally retarded.
I don't have much of a problem with cloning as long as it's not used for stupid and cruel medical reasons... I mean, if a family really wants twins for some reason or something, then let them have them.
Regardless, I think everybody's imagining the clone being the exact same age as the original and being alike in every possible way. That's not true. I can imagine that clones would be made from the DNA of already living people, rather than a fetus or something along those lines. The clone will grow up normally, be raised in a different (you can't be exact by the hour when it comes to raising a child) environment, perhaps have different parental units... they're going to be a different age than the original, and they're going to have different personalities and traits. Hell, the clone could end up looking completely different than the original. Different hair, speech, dressing... etc. Same idea goes for cloned birth twins. And that evil twin idea, though plausible to some degree, is so unlikely that I'm ignoring it all together.
But then it all comes back down to the Christians. Yeah, sure... I won't even bother. They can think and do whatever they want.
okay a mess up in the cloning is possible. however, no more crap about clones becoming evil and destroying the world. i get that a lot. more commong mess ups and screw ups would be disorders in the gene line that can cause pheno and geno disorders, meaning physical and genetic problems.
a clone could be altered in a way to become a sociopath or psychopath, however, as a clone i think it would be monitored as a government project and not allowed to do those things.
IMHO reproductive cloning is currently unethical based solely on the quality of life expected in the cloned creature/individual. That quality of life being significantly lower due to the increased potential for health problems and genetic complications. Also, the biological age of any cloned creature/individual is similar to that of the 'arent' subject, leading to reduced life expectancy.
However, therapeutic cloning (i.e. the production of stem cells, skin grafts, organs etc.) in my eyes is entirely acceptable and has the potential to greatly benefit humanity in terms of advances in the treatment of previously incurable conditions and the recovery of severely injured humans.
