Indeed. I'd have thought Australia and the UK have the same attitude to men of a young age claiming to drink wine. Ie. it's pretty much against man law.
Note, not "the law" (it is legal to drink alcohol inside the house of a responsible guardian), but "man law"...there's that whole bartender stereotype cheat-sheet that, boiled down, goes something like this:
a) Beer- blokey bloke. Knows what he wants and gets it. Either that or he's on a round-the-world trip. Wish him luck in that case. b) Wine- classy pretensions. If he orders wine in a bar it generally means he wants to look more knowledgeable than he actually is, since real wine-tossers would be at the winery or in a snooty restaurant, and way the hell away from a bar. c) Spirits- if mixed, either likes to take it easy or a bit grey. If straight shots, a loose cannon out to impress. If blowing large amounts of money for low volume returns is impressive to you. d) Fruity drinks and cocktails- probably gay.
I've been through the c) and the a) stage...when I was doing b) I wasn't old enough to go to a bar. I never did d) because I've tried (my mother egged me on) and figured yuk, what's the point.
These days all I ask for is water. This attracts very strange looks from the bartenders, so I fish out my car keys and say "it's my turn tonight", which clears it right up
A,b and d are pretty much the same in the UK. C however is different. Since the mid 90s straight spirits have become much more accepted as being manly. I think that's in part down to the fact that it's easier and cheaper to get drunk off spirits and due to the binge drinking thing we in the UK are obsessed with.
As for me personally, I went through C when I was underage, for the price reason afore mentioned, but I pretty much stick to A when I can right now. I'm still not a big fan of wine and will only drink it if at a fancy doo of some sort.
As for the water thing I can empathise. When I started flying I took a 9 month break from drinking. Now I only drink around Christmas time. Whilst on active service it's not wise to have any alcohol in your system due to the detrimental effects it has on your reaction time and co-ordination, in the long term that is.
As for the suggestion that the US is like Greece, most Greeks would probably be insulted.

This is why most of the grown-ups here are getting a bit tetchy at your remarks, alt. Not that I don't believe you (not that there would be any point to it). The urge to "overplay your age" tends to die off after a while, though, usually along with the realisation that you actually do know a lot more than you did, say, six-years ago.

Really? It doesn't seem nearly as multicultural as Australia or the UK.
Tbh, it isn't for the most part. But we do kinda steal traditions from other cultures. . . . I'm not exactly happy I live in America, btw. I've always wanted to live in the UK. ------
As a whole it seems quite distinctly segregated into white, black and everything in between (latino or asian) gets put in either the white or the black basket :\\\\
