Do you think you need to have a religion [christian jewish catholic etc.] or you really dont need one [anthiest] i would think you need one is my opinion just something to celebrate and beleive in
The Irish philosopher Iris Murdoch says that religion is the same as day dreaming. It's in place to place a viel over the pain that people feel and so while it has merit overall it's unnessecary.
I had a nice rambling rant typed up, but the short answer seems more appropriate to the initial question...
No - nobody needs religion. If you need something to celebrate and/or believe, why don't you just celebrate your life every day and enjoy it while you're here?
I felt like reviving a thread, so I picked an interesting one.

Because that life will end eventually. There's no harm in believing that there's more to life than meets the eye. If I'm wrong an atheism is correct, I won't regret it. I manage to live a perfectly full life AND hold down a religion. I guess nobody NEEDS it, but religion is very helpful to a lot of people. Nobody needs it, but nobody needs it to be gone either.

Agreed, I heard it put this way once if were wrong oh well we lived to our best knowledge but if were right well your kinda screwed.

Well,if atheism is correct then you won't really have the choice to regret or accept being wrong, since you'll be dead, and life will just end there.

Good point. But supposing I could regret, I wouldn't. If it's destined to end that way for me, and I find out the day before I die, I'm not going to pout over having been wrong about religion. The guy I was responding to just made a short reply that's probably been stated on every thread before, so I felt a need to let my views be known. Long responses are what cause interesting discussions (such as this one ).
Well if I'm wrong, then i'll guess I'll spend eternal life in hell. Well, at least I heard they good chicken.
Not necessarily. I don't know you other than by a few posts, but happening to stumble upon the right religion is a bit of a stretch. I don't think God would punish a good person for not knowing he exists (or not believing, rather). At least not the God I believe in. So if you go to Hell, I'll be right there with you. Lookin forward to the chicken...

Well, according to church (and yes I go to church even though I'm atheist, but thats another story) atheism is punishable with hell. There was a sermon in which they said that just cause they look like good people doesn't mean they are, and atheism is just another name for sin.

Hmm, that sounds pretty awful. Maybe they overexaggerated or something, meaning it's more likely to go to Hell as an atheist or something. That really doesn't sound right. Even us Catholics, who have said only Catholics are in heaven, believe everyone can go there because you are baptized Catholic through the blood of Christ if you were a good person (that's another story too). Do you know what specific Christian denomination church you go to?
