I'm just going to throw this out there... Call me crazy, or correct me, but...
It just seems like when it comes to controversial issues that could possibly conflict with certain religious views, all religious arguments are immediately classified as false, untrue, mumbo-jumbo.
Is it not okay to express your own personal beliefs about a certain issue based on what your religion says without being shunned and regarded as a closed minded fool?
Is it not okay to use the bible, the torah, the Koran, or any other religious book as your argument?
Most people as it seems on these forums would argue that you are not allowed to argue with those things because not all people believe in the same religion.
But couldn't I just as easily debunk all of your arguments because I don't believe in the same things you do?
I suppose the point I really want to get down to is why religion seems to be so widely unaccepted on these forums?
Well, I'm a Christian Conservative Rush Limbaugh listener, and I will gladly debate anyone on almost any topic, even if I must take the opposing side.
To me, the point of a debate is not to "set the record straight" all the time, because these issues have been debated thousands of times over. The reason I debate is to help reinforce my position, and I find that trying to defend the view that I DON'T agree with helps me do that.
That's pretty interesting, Agent. I haven't really tried debating the opposing side, though I suppose I could do it. I might not do it as well as someone who takes that standpoint could, but I suppose that would reinforce my position as well. But I debate for pretty much the same reasons. Anyway, I find that if you don't bring religion into non-religious topics, it doesn't hinder your ability to debate at all, or at least not your ability to enjoy it.
Pretty much yeah, seems like you cant go anywhere without these huge post made by atheist people, I dont fall into a religion group so what I hear that sounds logical I look it up on Google and other sites until I find something that doesnt change and then Im like Ok good enough for me
What I find, esp. around here, is that people only see their side of the issue and therefore can't be objective, which is the apex of true debating. The best way, IMO, to see both sides of an issue is to take the other side once in a while and see the issue in a different light.

I agree that this is true a lot of the time. The only problam I see with this idea is, outside of debate clubs, when is one asked to defend a point that they don't agree with? In the case of forum debates people are inclined to support their own opinions. These opinions are fluid and they can be altered. It may be true that people are not likely to be completely turned to anothers way of thinking when defending thier own views but peoples thoughts and opinions are often modified when exposed to new perspectives and information.
