Today North Korea sent a message to the US, in the form of seven ballistic missiles. Obviously, they didn't hit anything, but it is still going to increase tension between the UN and North Korea.
What I'm wondering though, is why in the world they would launch missiles that they know aren't going to get close to the US. Also, North Korea isn't exactly the largest country, and if the US was to go to war with them it would be over very quickly. North Korea wouldn't be able to match the size of the army, and our own nuclear weapons could wipe them off the map if we chose to use them.
How do you feel about the situation? Will the US once again be police of the world, or will we for once make the UN deal with this on their own? Is Kim Jong Il just stupid, or is there a reason he spends millions of dollars to develop missiles, then sends them shooting into the ocean?

Bringing up Serbia was just me trying to figure out why you're inclined to post such an inflammatory and groundless remark. After all, you are *really* hot headed on that subject - figured it was a dead ringer for all that adolescent rage/teenage angst. And you haven't said anything to the contrary.
I'm not going to bother posting on North Korea. My views on the subject have already been stated in posts by other people; as such, I don't really give a damn. There's no point in redundantly spitting out the same things that someone else already has.
Actually the general world view of South Korea is that they've been victimized by North Korea... It would be interesting to see first hand what the relations really are there (especially at the border).

Alright, didn't think of that. But they have strict sanctions against them, so they might as well not be in at all. Sure, if they wanted to co-operate they would be welcomed back, but they don't want to co-operate.

basically... but they are. It seems like the world is afraid to take any actions right now, probably because no one wants to take the kind of bad press the US gets for Iraq. The difference would be that this situation might actually develop into a real threat... because we have real evidence of missile development...

If the US is going to go to war with ANYONE ELSE, they are going to need some backing from the UN. With Iraq and Afghanistan, we seemed to think we could just take on the whole world on our own and were wrong! Any future military action needs to be a joint effort, otherwise the rest of the world will hate us even more than they do now =P
Honestly, I would be more worried about China. Eventually they will be on par with the US in terms of technology and then they won't need to worry about the USA. In fact, they could probably do something now because the USA doesn't have such a great image regarding their more recent wars which means the public won't be willing to have the US military go off to war again. Let other countries take care of themselves, they'll say.
The problem here is if Iran and North Korea join arms. They are the two major threats. However, they are both small countries. If I had the choice, I would nuke North Korea, because they are convincing themselves that they can destroy a large country like the United States. But what about civilians? Well, to correct myself, I suppose everyone is either to be under a communist government, or die. So, yes, North Korea is stupid.
