This was a thought that occurred to me in the debate about God thread. I just didn't want to bring up there because it's kinda off track. So... What do you believe in? Why do you believe in that?
I don't a religious believer saying something stupid that we've all heard before like, "I believe in God because there's a book about him."(you would be amazed how many times i've heard this) I don't want a non-religious believer saying something stupid like "I believe in nothing."(once again, I've heard this before waaaaaay too many times)
I want to hear good, well thought out statements. avoid flaming.
after a Christian upbringing, that my beliefs did not mesh well with the rational world I wanted to be a part of. From a purely empirical standpoint, religion doesn't work for me.
care to give an example of how your ideas didn't fit in?
To a point, I am a rationalist, and the stance of the church I was a part of on many issues just didn't seem so to me, and so I left at age 14.
oh, ok. if i were you i would see about checking out a few of the other churches in your area. My parents are divorced and move often. in the last 2 years i've gone to about 5 or 6 different churches. there have been some where I walked in and agreed with most of the things they said. There were others where i was confused the whole time and constantly got mad at some of the things that were said. No two churches are the same, is what i've learned.
the guy correcting you is probably adork that will still live with their mom when they're 30.
Or obsessive compulsive.
Hrm... I believe to, an extent, that God created all the matter that was gathered in that one tiny point in the center of the galaxy, then created the science, physics, and logic that would end up creating the big bang.

so you don't believe he directly created us...just the big bang?
The matter within the big bang and the science that came after it. Yeah, I do believe he created everything, all life, matter, and antimatter. I suppose I should have specified that Alt.

If that's true then he'd still have created us because he created the big bang. For ex. if someones wife is pregnant and makes a baby. God would have made the big bang which made Earth which created humans which gave birth to the wife which gave birth to the baby. So relatively speaking he made the baby.

*ahem*
THIS IS NOT A DEBATING THREAD THIS IS AN EXPLAIN WHAT YOU BELIEVE THREAD.
but still it does bring a question to mind. do you believe in genes at all? or that everything is made DIRECTLY by God? Or do you believe in things like genes and that God created the first man, therefore he INDIRECTLY created his children, and their children, etc...?
I'm a catholic but i don't believe in creationism or evolution i believe in a combination of the 2 ideas. like the big bang, there had to be something before the big bang happened. also like how earth got to be in a perfect position to create carbon based life forms. there had to be a certain number of semi-determined events to lead up to the evolution of man.

hmm, so you believe that there was a God or something like that planning it all out and then basically made it all happen?
