Yes, after much mind debate and different forum-jumping, I come to you, my family, my blood, my screen-name brethren that both like the medeival era AND games, into a war that by far may change... nothing at all, actually!
You might be wondering what the heck I'm talking about, and I still don't fully understand it. The overview of it all is in all of 2 words: Furry war.
No, I'm not talking about one of zoph's stories (bad mod joke), but instead an actual interweb flame war that has gone so far for two internet POLITICAL PARTIES.
First party: The Trolls. Basically, they... wlel, they troll. Now trolls aren't even in furrywar only. Trolls are just jackoffs with nothing better to do than to make fun of other people or just verbally assault one another for teh fun of it. Basically, they're e-thugs, because talking smack in person is dangerous.
Second party: Furries. Well, long story short, Zoph is one of them. Though, from what I remember, she doesn't really think of herself as a hardcore furry or anything like that. Furries are generally about tolerance, and having a good time. Least that's what I've gathered from youtubing for an obscene amount of time and getting into a few flame wars myself, I've found I actually support this group purely because they make the most sense.
The war? What's it about? Oh it's simple. Near nothing, of course! It's all just two people yelling at each other. They just have opposing views and what do they do because of it?
Get over them and make love, peace, and overall better the world!
Just kidding, they fight and flame like /b/tards.
Now then, here's my views on the subject from both points of view:
Troll View: Okay, furries are different from me and have different sexual habits..... kay, I watch porn on a daily basis so I really shouldn't care but I do anyways!
Furry View: Trolls are meanies who want nothing but to eff with me, so instead of just ignoring them and reportning them I'll...... FLAME BACK!
Neutral View: well both of the stereotypical sides are pretty much hypocrites. The furries are supposedly supposed to be all about tolerance or something while they don't tolerate the trolls or their habits, and the trolls shun the furries due to their perfectly JUSTIFIED hate for humanity and "erverted" ways. Hey troll, what's that I see in your bookmarks? ... is it... it can't be.... PORN?! YOU SHOULD DIE IN A FIRE ON A STAKE!!!!
Now then, what're your views on the subject? Please be good about this and not just f*ck around, please?

I guess you could consider me an onlooker removed from the actual group - I like clean anthro art, having fun, and animals, and I'm open-minded, but I wouldn't consider myself furry just based on those criteria.

Ah, but you forget something there: Just because you have something in common with a group of people, it doesn't mean you're one of them.
I posted no definition of what a furry is, because I don't think there is one. If you feel comfortable within the fandom there's a good chance you are, but there's a fair bit of artists drawing typical furry art who does not consider themselves furries. And there's people who consider themselves furries, but dislike the general fandom and keeps their furriness to themselves.
If you don't consider yourself a furry, you are not a furry. Doesn't matter how much you have in common with them (though if it's a lot, furries might think you're one of them).
Nice that you seem to have some sympathy for furs, though. Many have the "ew yiff" reaction and shuns it due to stereotypes.

I actually didn't bring bestiality/zoophilia up, but I'm guessing you read the "rather see it with humans than with anthros" as animals instead of anthros.
Anthropomorphic animals are generally not considered the same thing as real life animals, and most of the arguments against zoophilia are about how animals can't give consent. The most common anthropomorphic trait is sentience (both in feral and humanoid anthros). Which means they can give consent and in fact thinks in ways similar to humans.
I still see what would creep you out about it, though, but most furries I know are not into zoophilia at all. Most furry porn involves animals of this grade of human similarity, which personally I'd consider pretty far from regular animals.
And I'm so tempted to make a dendrophilia joke about raping nature, but I can't come up with a good one.
Funny fact: Any paraphilia that you do not find appealing is likely to be "strange", "disgusting", or just "weird" to you. I'm past that stage, I've seen too much. Now it's at most an "I'd never ever do that! D8" from me.
Also, some people just get critters to - ... I really need to remember the PG13 thing. Oh well, I'm sure you can live without knowing what others do that doesn't really constitute raping~
