Now you're probably opening this thinking "oh great another rant on religion", well you're right. But please keep reading on because what I have to say is important and applies to all beliefs, even if you don't have one.
Many religions now believe the world is going to end, soon. Basically they believe this because of "signs" and their precious magic books. Well the scary thing is the world could end soon, and religion could actually be its cause. The fact is, for the world to live on religion must die. Faith is nothing to brag about it, and people who accept faith, or preach it are just intellectual slaveholders. Religion has caused so much craziness and destruction and I think 9/11 is a great example, however I won't get into it much because of everything else I have to say.
Now, why is religion so powerful? Because it allows people who DON'T have the answer to what happens when we die to think they do. If you're a christian or any other religion you may think it's great to say "PLEASE GOD I'M WILLING! I'LL DO ANYTHING YOU ASK OF ME!" Well guess what, there are no gods talking to us so that void is filled in by corrupt and often hostile people.
This is why anti-religious rationalists must come out of the freakin closet and let themselves be heard. And for those of you who only consider yourselves "a little religious", is the safe feeling of believing in a religion worth the pain and destruction it causes? If you belonged to a social group that wasn't a religion that involved so much bigotry, homophobia, violence, and ignorance as religions you would quit the club and protest against it. And if the end of the world comes because of nuclear arms led by religious nut jobs... just remember what the true problem was. We found a way to end lives on a mass scale before we stopped wishing for it.
More like I've always been one then turned atheist recently for a while now I'm agnostic again.
the only thing different is that I'm not trying to decide if I think I believe in the bible or not cuz I know I don't. Like I said...
I AM AN AGNOSTIC. But that doesn't mean if I thought God was talking to me I would convert to a Christian... I would go to a therapist :P I think logically a God or something like that must have had some part in creating the universe. I DON'T BELIEVE JESUS CHRIST WAS THE MESSIAH. He's a great philosopher, sort of like Socrates and probably the best role-model ever.
Oddly enough I harbor less hateful feelings towards the mainstream religions as an atheist then I did when I was agnostic.
Possibly because as agnostic you were still trying to make a choice and having it forced AT you, since you still had suspicions about higher power(s), while as an athiest the choice is clear, and there's no more pressure. Or just an odd coincidence.
[i]religeon it can be good for you its just the extremists who screw it up
[b]yeah i think you are rite especially for muslims the extreamists screwed it up the discraced the name of islam and now most of the worl are against them its time they start relising the we are not terrorrists well not all of us at least. im a muslim and i respect everyone on earth no matter what relegion and that is the true meaning of islam respect everyone and respect god

Exactly how I feel (except I'm Christian, but...). I think religions in general, while maybe containing a few extremists, get way more of a bad reputation than they deserve, ESPECIALLY the Islamic faith. What I find (not on AG so much, but in my personal life) is that people don't understand the religions they criticize, only a couple of things that a couple of people from the religion did. So they find a wya to judge it that way.
Faith is nothing to brag about it, and people who accept faith, or preach it are just intellectual slaveholders.
Epic.

I think the Bush administration was a great example when it comes to war. He often said "we are in a battle between good and evil" and "I believe this is God's work". And 9/11, also was fueled by religion.
While I'm not sure if the world will end because of nuclear arms launched because of religion, I do think religion... organized religion which I think the OP was talking about is one of the things that need to be dealt with for the world to live on. Almost as serious as global warming.
Remember I said organized religion though. Don't freak out on me people lol. I'm not disrespecting your beliefs
Sorry to bring back this old thread btw. I just loved the OP so much I had to revive it =]

None of that proves that there is no god. And the holy war stuff doesn't really apply to Christianity, we haven't had holy wars for like 400 years.

I don't think the point was to prove there is no God at all. The point was to show that organized religion is corrupt and causes violence. Like 9/11 and the Christian war that we call the war on terrorism.
George W. Bush often said his goal was to spread democracy in Iraq. Why? He said that's what he knew that's what God wanted. He said it was a war between Good and Evil. Aka Christian nation vs non Christians.
