1 Location: The best possible spot would be above ground probably a roof.
2 Protection: Well for one, make sure the roof your on is not made of glass... don't wanna fall cause some robot decided to walk on glass. Another good idea for protection would be to make some sort of trap that will alert you to them.
3 Fighting: Now, while i do not recommend fighting a robot, the best possible way to kill them would be to out maneuver then and get to a spot that is not protected by armor. Another way to kill them would be to use Electric Magnetic Pulse bombs to short circuit them. If possible find open wiring on them and use a torn electrical cord and shot their internal components.
4 Surviving: Never stay in one area, always move, but only to places you've never been, stay away from going in a pattern.
