Today is the 70th Anniversary of the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. 17 days later, the Soviets launched an invasion from the East and wiped Poland off the map. Not even two years later, the German-Russian alliance broke down, and the Germans invaded the Soviet Union. Over the next four years, the Soviets lost over 27 million people fighting back the Germans and toppling Nazi Germany. At the same time, the Americans pushed the Germans out of France and other Western nations hastening the collapse of the Third Reich.
World War II was the bloodiest war in history. It also required a huge sacrifice from all people of all nations to defeat Fascism. Because of the brave fight put up by the Allied Soldiers, the nations throughout Europe and the people in Japan live in a world without Fascism and militarism. It was a heroic struggle to liberate the world.

Yes, exactly. Despite the fact British and (mainly Canadian) Commonwealth forces actually made up over half of the invasion force, it was the Americans who liberated Western Europe.

You get used it, this being a majority US website and all, but still, you'd think that Americans would know about WW2, it being such a huge source of national pride for them.

Huh, I could have sworn I included the British and Canadians when I typed it. I must have erased them to word the sentence differently. My bad.

It's no problem. It's just unhelpful when such a respected member of the AG community perpetuates the myth that America saved the world. The young 'uns you see. They're impressionable.

It was a group effort. Rather than arguing over who deserves credit for what, we should reflect on the lessons learned from the whole ordeal. Those would include "Nazis suck".

Yeah, it is a common myth, that's in US history books, that America won WWII. When I student taught history, some of the students were blown away when I said the Soviets were the ones who put the biggest punishment on the Germans, and really won the war. They were convinced that it was all America.

In Britain, it's not so bad, but you can still find some bulldog pride in the younger generations. Casualty figures don't tell you everything, but it is safe to say that it was the Soviets who put the biggest dent in the Nazi war machine.

That's something I can definitely agree on. On that note, I would like to say that one of the main things we should learn from WW2 is that aggressive nationalism is a dangerous thing, and the whole '[insert nation here] did the most' act is a symptom of that.
Well since the soviets were the ones who took over germany and fought their way to hitler, they might of just taken him right? Probably tortured him or something? I mean, all we have that he commited suicide is just their word...

Probably one of the main reasons Hitler committed suicide was to prevent being taken captive by the Soviets. He probably would have publicly humiliated, then brutally executed and his body flaunted around the world. It would make no sense for the Soviets to have captured him and kept it a secret. It would have been a massive propaganda victory. Besides which, there are official German records from inside his bunker documenting the exact time and location of his suicide, and even the names of the soldiers who were assigned to burn his corpse in gasoline.
bless those who fought for our country, we will never forget the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for our lives now. they gave their hour for our future.
