If you debate for the sole purpose of changing people's minds, then screw it. Debating is a learning experience in the style of the scholastic method of the old times. Some can appreciate it, some can't.

And, even though I am not a religious person (Atheist) you should respect other peoples religious beliefs.

Agreed. Can't we all be respectful of each other? Some Of you know that I too am an atheist that was born and raised in a strict Christian home ... there is no reason for calling anything or anyone stupid just because you don't believe in it or what others believe. You are never going to change anyone's mind if they are a vivid believer. Nor are the theist going to change an atheist's mind.

Exactly. It is suppose to be an exercise of the mind, not a tool to argue in order for the sake of arguing.

One thing that needs to be done is the seperation of faith from religion. I have faith. I dont know if there is a creator of some kind, im not a fence sitter... i just genuinly dont know. I in no way belive in any religion as it is all written by men. I wouldnt put people down for believing, but i admit it frustrates me that people need that crutch... but if they need it and it helps make em a better person then good... my main problem is people conveniently use religion as a war waging tool. Im sick of that over a book written by men (whichever one you choose, there is so many).
The real debate should take place on the grounds that everyone has individual beliefs, and a right to do so. The fake debate is a peacock strut of my opinion is better that yours because...

Lets face it... NOONE KNOWS for shure... this is a fact. Noone really knows they know what they know... so debating is a good way of knowing what other people know and then seeing what I think I know compared to what they think they know, leading to a new understanding of what we all may or may not REALLY know. Cos this could be a dream... or the matrix... or a petri dish... etc... its turtles all the way.

I'm not sure how that would work considering that's all religion has to stand on.

I dont know if there is a creator of some kind, im not a fence sitter... i just genuinly dont know.

One of the last conversations I had with my dad he asked what I believed and gave the same answer. There is nothing wrong with the answer "I don't know". The next question to ask here is what is most likely?

I couldn't agree more here. I find it odd and disheartening that something that is suppose to bring all humanity together is the biggest factor at ripping us apart.

This is why independent testing and peer review studies are so important to science.
