Well I know alot of Germans in my school, and I go to them, and ask them "Can you speak German?" then they go "ummmmm no" If you ask me every person should know their own nationality, every language is beautiful. Why wouldnt people learn it?
It's partly because some people criticize those who speak their native language n public. They may not want you to discriminate against how they are speaking German in America. I see many people who do the same thing to Mexicans who speak Spanish in public, and it is mentally degrading to have someone humiliate you for not conforming to their view of how ever individual should be.

Regardless of race, your native tongue is the very first language you speak and know. I'm German, and I don't speak their language, though I know a few choice words, hint hint ;-)

Mexican immigrants(no offense)and you think that they'd have to learn English,since it is the national language. Wrong! Instead of enforcing to them that they have to learn our language,WE have to learn Theirs! Wtf?!? Also,they get Spanish textbooks and newsletters in schools,so the school system isn't even encouraging them to learn the language.

As a few key people have pointed out, I will point this point out again just more... jerk-y. Your native tongue the first first language you speak. Saying you don't know your native tongue is stupidity of mentally retarded proportions, and I presume whoever would say this is not a native English speaker. And telling someone they are bad for not speaking a language NATIVE TO THEIR ANCESTRAL UPBRINGINGS is stupid. I know Russian and English, I am 100% Armenian, but I don't speak it. I speak Russian because my parents spoke Russian to me when I was born. I really wanna learn Armenian >.<!
Hey Klaushouse,I think what FryLock was saying is that people coming over from Mexico should be bilingual,speak both Spanish and English. The same would be the case if I went to Mexico,I'd want to speak the native tongue and my native tongue.
