The US isn't and wasn't a direct democracy. Why should he have listened to the wishes of the Southern masses?
I'm just pointing out he isn't one to be idolized. A man who freed the slaves not because it was wrong to have slaves, but as a punishment for those who did not agree with him.
actually bluesbros Lincoln didn't want to free slaves. He wanted to keep slavery the way it was, however the southerners thought he wanted to take their slaves. Because of this they seceded. Not long after THEY attacked a US fort and started the United States Civil War with "The Shot heard 'round the world".
Sooo ya, his motivation wasn't to punish. The country was attacked and without war the country would be divided and/or still have slavery today.
