I put this on my About and felt it needed to be a thread.

Data

*Are approximations

When *200,000 users hit, *163,897 of them had 10 AP or lower.
When *300,000 users hit, *247,117 of them had 9 AP or lower.

Now to me, this is some pretty convincing evidence that either:
1. The ranking system is somehow flawed
2. There is a serious amount of space being taken up by inactive accounts.

I agree, inactive accounts should be sent an e-mail telling then that if they don't respond within the next week their account will be reset and the username will be available to all members of the community.

in response to "maybe they'll come back" arguement.

it's 10 & 9 AP that have this, if they rated and commented 6 games then they would not be in those #s.

in response to "they're not taking up space" argument.

EVERYTHING takes up space. one way to hopefully reduce lag is to get rid of unneeded filled space, leading to more possible updates.

bring it on, pro-ghosties.

I don't see why we don't have this notification about be-active-or-you-die ghost accounts. They don't have to make comments or post something, just use the account for whatever means. This goes back to the sad argument that people don't post, rate, or comment, but they still use the account. This would be a lot more simpler if we had the last active feature back, and everything would run smoothly if the staff simply upgraded their server.

So... which takes up more space? 1 ghost account, or one thread?

The majority of these users will be never active, so my opinion is:
all the one year-old or more accounts with less than 5 AP should be deleted.
If somebody wants to come back, he may have lost his account, but his account was never active so he does not have to start over anything.

bring it on

Come on now, sugar,
Bring it on, bring it on, yeah.

what is the purpose of having an account? to look at the numerous "good" and "ok" comments on games?

undetermined, why keep when you have a reason to delete? threads stay because it is programmed as long as you have a post there, you have the AP.

The thing is...this issue has been brought up numerous times...even way back when there were about 30k users...

The thing is, it would take too much to do this, and it isn't necessary. They don't really slow down the server...

Nothing has been done in the past...and so I doubt anything will be done now....

It hasn't occurred to you that people just want to play games? The rankings aren't flawed at all. You can get over 9 AP in a minute if you were to really try. A profile can just be a placeholder to keep your favorite games in some cases, no need to comment/rate games.

Also, as mentioned above the "ghost accounts" don't really slow down the site. Sites also prefer to keep accounts just to say, "OMG we have 45862409 users" when only a small fraction are still active. That is why several sites don't allow you to fully delete your account.

This really isn't an issue.

do you know that? how do you even know how much a ghost takes up? may i remind you we're currently in "site optimization" and a buncha features were removed.

yea, i've always sorta disliked the sites that don't have the marvelous QUIT button. these pontless users need to be deleted. SO if we don't have a quit button there should at least be a rule where if you are inactive for 5 months or more, your account will be deleted :O

Here's a response to the "Well, maybe they just use it for viewing comments and stuff" argument.

They can create another. Then we'll see how accurate your statements are.

There should be a quota that a new user needs to fill (a small one). A certain number of AP, or maybe comments. It might just get them hooked while they do it.

A quota would piss a lot of people off, because a lot of traffic is generated through AG exclusive content. They just want something that they can't have on other sites.

As for the "ghost accounts" why do they bother you so much? Did any of you read why the sites keep accounts around?

Also, shouting empty profiles is completely pointless and makes you look like an ass, so stop it. Being rude to people makes even less people want to be involved in the community therefore making more ghost accounts.

There is no such thing as AG exclusive content. This is a game site, nothing more.

And if you mean the community, 99% of ghosties have never posted here.

This site is 84% slower than almost any other site out there.

Get rid of all the accounts, and you get 60%. They take up massive amounts of space on an already straining server.

Also, shouting empty profiles is completely pointless and makes you look like an ***, so stop it. Being rude to people makes even less people want to be involved in the community therefore making more ghost accounts.

It's called ghosty spam. It's an undetectable way to spam.

The ghosties never reply, because they are in fact, ghosts. Simply go to 100 ghosties and flame them all.

You will NEVER get a response from any of them.

Never getting a response doesn't make it okay. Whether anyone sees or not, it's pointless.

Where are you getting your statistics from? If this was an official statement I am pretty sure AG would delete the inactive accounts.

AG exclusive content does exist. Extra class in Sonny is an example. All skills in Gemcraft is another. Games that have certain incentives if you play them on AG.
