Alright, all over the news today people have been making a big fuss over Chicago not being picked to host the 2016 Olympics.
If you didn't know, Chicago tried to press their American power on the Olympic committee. They had speeches by the President, his wife, and Oprah for some reason... Anyway, everyone in Chicago thought they were a shoe in, but they got eliminated in the first voting round. The "winner" was Rio de Janeiro, the first time a city from South America was chosen.
So what are your thoughts? Are you pissed about Chicago not getting picked? Or maybe happy for Rio? Don't Care?
Me personally, I think it is funny how they are making such a big deal about it, the US has already hosted the Olympics quite a few times. It's funny how they thought having Pres. Obama speak would make the commitee pick Chicago. I realize not all of you on AG aren't American, but I'm sure you could still add to this.
Personally, as a londoner i am more focused on the upcoming 2012 games, i don't really care much about 2016, but they do seem to be fussing quite alot, anyway - Kudos to Rio
Congrats to Rio, I don't really care though lol it's the medals that count (preferably gold) and America usually always is one of the top holder of those
Considering I live only 1 state over from Chicago, I'd be annoyed with all the fuss about the Olympics. Everyone at my school was pissing themselves for weeks when the Colts won the Super Bowl, so if a city soooooo close to us got to host the Summer Olympics . . . .
Yeah, I don't wanna imagine it.
I gotta say though, Rio is a neat city. I think they won for the novelty value of the first South American Olympics, personally.

lol for the Oprah. Maybe is good for Chicago that they were not picked. All the other cities which have hosted the Olympic games did not gain almost nothing by this, though they invested millions.

Agreed.
I think what shocked most people is how the commitee eliminated Chicago first. I do feel for the people who tried so hard to get it in Chicago, but I think they relied on being American to much.
last winter we didn't have the money to plow all our sidestreets the day or day after it snowed. yes, they were plowed a few days later, but by then, it was pure ice.
last winter we either didn't have the money or our mayor didn't have the BRAIN to fill the growing, exponentially cumulating potholes.
It would have been awesome to have them here (i only live a about 2 hours away), but it's no big deal. It's just one Olympics, they can try again for 2020.
don't say that you wouldn't have a problem with them being in Chicago unless you live in a 606 area code. otherwise, you're not dealing with even heavier taxes, you're not dealing with incredibly heavy traffic, you're not dealing with overpriced things everywhere you look, you're not dealing with a million or more tourists.
Ah, well, I think Chicago is being too snobby about this whole thing. I mean, what gives them the right to act that way just because they lost; lots of other cities lost too. And Rio should be able to be proud that they were chosen instead of being overshadowed by Chicago being mad that they didn't get it. Rio is a great city, and Chicago is too; but Rio was chosen, so Chicago can stop whining about it. I live in Utah; our capital, SLC, hosted the '02 Winter Olympics. And I'm here to tell you that it's an honor, but other than that, it's pretty crappy. You shoulda seen the traffic.
and, Chicago already has the second worst traffic in the USA.
all summer, i rode my bike to/from work, every day or every other day i was just riding past bumper-to-bumper traffic, and even when it was moving it was so slow i could easily keep up with it.
There was a lot of people betting for Chicago here. There was a lot of people going "OMG OPRAH!!/OBAMA!!" here too. And then there was me who ignored it all.
I think it is all fine. It is a horrible fuss with the Olympics anyway, and if cities need to get a sports event going before they can get some sales going, they might want to think up their own gimmick.
