Woo, went from story over rewrite over realism over fantasy over thriller to horror, all in three days. And I still don't have a plot, and I can't write clean any more. Bleeping bleep. Tomorrow is a school day, tomorrow is also a day I should use on my portfolio assignment; I will most likely end up doing nothing until 8pm before I start writing NaNo again. ... I think this is my official frustration vent.
Gantic, you're the first person in over a year to make me consult a dictionary.
It's in my big book of words I've learned but never use. I'm turning into Faulkner! Nooo...
Also, I like looking words up I know in different dictionaries because they may give a different primary sense. (And I used recondite because I think abstruse is a stupid word. The only reason anyone'd use abstruse is if they're talking about Abstruse Goose and who talks about Abstruse Goose???)
What I'm writing: Fantasy dredge that boils down to compromising (and) convictions and tangentially related to individualism vs. collectivism. It's a side story to a different main plot that is basically the same but not, because it's supposed to be a morality tale. Anyways: the dredge: Guy becomes super killing machine with one fatal weakness (if Superman were an assassin). He "goes home" and stuff and things get complicated.
Recondite rolls off the tongue much easier than abstruse. However, abstruse appears to be some amalgam of abstract and obtuse, even though its aetiology isn't really all that related.
I have a problem. I need to seriously rethink my plot if the next bit is going to make sense/any compelling reading. So here I am, updating my already bulky log of notes of revisions and changes to my novel instead of upping the word count.
Not sure if I'll make it to 25k today, which is what I'd really want in order to finish in 10 days...partially because Saturday is a blowout day. I'm holding a fancy dress party, which, really, means I'll be going as myself.
Also, I like looking words up I know in different dictionaries because they may give a different primary sense.
I do that too. I tend to trust print dictionaries more than online ones, as my snobbish nature dictates that the more contemporary something is, the wronger it is.
Also, I knew... all of those words wacky words.
What I'm writing: Actually two things (kind of working on both, trying to see which one works out.) The first is a very generic fantasy, the details of which I find too stupid to put here. Maybe later. The other story is the story of an idealist, how he developed his ideals and how he fails to live up to them.
Well, it could be true... But honestly, all I've ever written are scenes. No real stories. I've thought real stories, but I've only ever written scenes...
Anyways.
I started over yesterday with a completely different story (although it takes place in the same world and is the same genre - for now). Wrote my way up to slightly more than 2400 words... Approximately 800 of which are from the appendix explaining words and names and places, some of which probably won't even be in the story but which got mentioned in the appendix entry for one or more of the things in the appendix that does get mentioned in the story and this is turning into a run on sentence now so I should probably find my ellipsis...
But yeah, what I'm writing: High fantasy, most likely turning into a "go fetch a treasure" generic plot with whatever personal touch I can add to it, hoping to make it slightly horror as well as fantasy, but not sure I'll be able to...
At least my characters are kind enough to boost the word count with their conversations.
I'm doing a rewrite story about that guy who gets fired by his hardass boss. Mixed up the entire world a bit, so the earlier story can be considered non-canon.
Thank goodness for only having to rewrite an day's work myself. And is it common to loose all ability to write clean this early? I guess I'm just tired.
At least my characters are kind enough to boost the word count with their conversations.
I wish my character did that. On the other hand that would make her talk to herself, and that is not very conversational.
Also I'll be breaking 25000 today, as per schedule.
So I thought you were crazy...but I think the ML from my region is at 30k...and got there last night.
My region's chatroom is...well...CRAZY!!! And highly feminist. I was kicked for being male, and then kicked again for not apologising I was male, and then kicked again for not getting my father to apologise for making me male.
Hahahahahahahahahaha that's awesome. Tell them to stop being so misandric, because misandric feminists give the rest of them a bad name.
Also I'm probably not even in the top 10 for my region. One's already broken 70000 words, another is on 44000 at the end of day 5, and there are at least 6 or 7 others who have 26000 or more.
By the end though I know I'm going to stop after 50k, because those exams seriously need studying for.
I have suddenly gotten a new close relationship with the dictionary on my computer, which I had never used before I saw the right click option on one of the words underlined with red - "Look up in Dictionary". And so I did, and thus I found a thingy that apparently contains New Oxford American Dictionary, Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus, Apple Dictionary and an access to Wikipedia... Only downside is that I make an effort to write British English rather than American English.
Btw, most of the time I completely ignore the underlined words - not because I ignore misspellings, I correct those almost immediately, but because I'm using so darned many made up words. I'm not cheating with my word count, I'm just writing high fantasy, it's difficult not to name things odd names! D:
Bad side about the dictionary: It is wickedly distracting. Also quite entertaining, I mean, look at this bit:
What we discern we see apart from all other objects (: to discern the lighthouse beaming on the far shore). Descry puts even more emphasis on the distant or unclear nature of what we're seeing (: the lookout was barely able to descry a man approaching in the dusk). To discriminate is to perceive the differences between or among things that are very similar; it may suggest that some aesthetic evaluation is involved (: to discriminate between two painters' styles). Distinguish requires making even finer distinctions among things that resemble each other even more closely (: unable to distinguish the shadowy figures moving through the forest). Distinguish can also mean recognizing by some special mark or outward sign (: the sheriff could be distinguished by his silver badge). Differentiate, on the other hand, suggests the ability to perceive differences between things that are easily confused. In contrast to distinguish, differentiate suggests subtle differences that must be compared in some detail (: the color of her dress was difficult to differentiate from the color of the chair in which she was seated;: it took a sharp eye to distinguish where her skirt ended and the upholstery began). If you have trouble differentiating among these closely related verbs, you're not alone.
On a positive note, I'm technically on my second day of writing and already have more than 4000 words. On the negative note that goes with this, I started two or three days late. And on a wtf-am-I-doing note, I just typed 200+ words here instead of continuing my novel.
And yes, I actually did have someone set something on fire in the bit I wrote on Guy Fawkes day. >_>
Totally. It's actually cool this time, and Henry is suspicious of a digital clock. Decided to completely shuffle the entire everything, even switch around the characters a bit. Set the world clock a bit forward, so it's a bit futuristic but not sci-fi, etc. It's going smoothly insofar.
My nanowrimo buds informed me today that what I'm writing is a mix of "slipstream" and "speculative" fiction. I'm so glad to have known them.
Descry sounds like a word I could have used a number of times already... that's a new one for me!
Going to try for a sprint as soon as I've reviewed everything I've written. After that, it's lock and load and everything goes TOTALLY BAT**** INSANE!!!!
