I do not feel very comfortable around homosexual people, I feel like there out to get my bum haha. I really dont understand why i feel like this, whenever i spot a homo i stay as far away as i can. I feel homophobia is just a natural reaction to something you dont like, for example snakes or spiders its just a phobia. I think that this phobia will never go away in alot of people, just because its natural. Although many people over come their phobias. What do ou all think of homophobia or phobias at all?

Zerato how can you not care even a little bit? I like to believe that fundamentally that humans are tolerant and good, but you're just making it hard to believe.

There are too many abortions walking around...

You are completely right Weeman.

You are going to get your ass kicked one day. It is fine if you have opinions about someone or a group of people but keep them to yourself. I suggest you don't insult people and say you don't care because when you insult the wrong person, you will care.

It is ok to think that he is wrong, that is your own opinion, but when you don't agree with something, you shouldn't tell everyone else to disagree with it too, because everyone else might not have the same opinion as you.

Some people are genuinely afraid of homosexuals.

I think Dtknight1's argument is that this necessarily falls under other considerations as you (Estel) mentioned previously.

I'm inclined to agree- diagnostically speaking it is simply not practical to consider 'homophobia' as a real phobia. It would, for one, open some legal defense for hate-crimes which ought to be controlled, if one could pretend that we treat the fundamentals of human behavior consistently, and that's a big concern.

Since when is it that people who are insecure about their own sexual orientation are homophobic?

I'm surprised you haven't heard the closet "takes one to know one" accusation, steevo. It's quite popular, especially around schools. But anyway, you got that the wrong way around. Converses are rarely true unless specified.

Does a homophobic have some sort of symptoms near gays?
Or are they just feeling "weird" around them?

@Drace

The word homophobia means "fear of gays." Of course, it now takes on the meaning "hatred of gays." The fear of gays comes from dacades old studies (which have proven to be untrue) that link homosexuality to pedophilia and rape. Others fear their lifestyle, how they act, or even that gays are cursed.

I'm don't think it's homophobic to feel "weird" around them. Hell, I'm bisexual and some gays just creep me out. It's in out DNA to be suspicious of people different from the norm. But if that suspicion turns into hate, then there is a problem.

So how does a homophobic feel around someone who is gay o.O?

I don't think anyone is really homophobic anyway.
It should just have more of a general definition of "Not being comfortable with homosexuals"

A true homophobic would be...well....scared! Homophobia is the fear of homosexuals, so he would fear them. "Not being comfortable," around homosexuals is NOT homophobia. Most instances that you can think of, are people that are just disgusted by it, or are just "edgy," that they are so different.

I think you would be surprised. But Estel, I think that you are viewing homophobia a little too strictly. You have to use it in the context that our society does. Our culture defines homophobia as the disapproval and disgust towards homosexual. They include feeling uncomfortable and awkward around homosexuals.

Well our recent culture has stretched things quite far. There are sooo many people that feel uncomfortable around homosexuals, but is everyone scared of them? I may sound pretty tight on this, but I am sticking to what the definition really is.

I don't want you to change your definition, I fully support you using the actual definition. But I mean in the context that is most likely to be used in this thread, that is the definition you should use because people wont call it what it really is.
