I was just wondering, have their been real cases where someone suffered from multiple personality disorders? I mean, not like voices, but has suffered from a disorder where they begin to become someone within an alternate ego?
I'm sorry, I know this is a very irrelevant question, but I just wondered for inspirational purposes.
I have heard of people who have dozens of personalities.
So, when you say distinct, you mean that it was like 7 different people, not just moods?
Yes, they were each different ages as well. From my understanding the age was a sort of marker for when each personality emerged.
There was a little girl, a quiet shy personality (this one went by her real name), a party girl, one that acted as a sort of "rotector" kind of a hard ***, a Philippno woman who spoke another language, a male personality, and one was a teenager maybe early 20s.
They each had different styles of handwriting. The most amazing feature was while my mom also had diabetes the male personality seemed to be able to maintain stable blood sugars without insulin.
Often when she changed she would first rub her hand up and down her leg a few times.
It's very rare and generally involves some terrible event to give someone such disorder.
Mage, were her personalities aware of your mom? I believe that the main personality is unaware of all the other personalities, while the other personalities are aware of her and each other.
Yes it is very difficult to diagnose. I don't remember how long, but it took quite a bit of observation before my mom was officially diagnosed.

Yes that's true.

Before she found out and starting getting help for it the main personality was aware of one other personality. Each personality perceived the ones they were aware of as completely separate people. The teenager personality didn't appear to be aware of an of the others, and I have no idea if the Philippno personality was aware or not either.
There was an 8th personality beginning to form but by this time my mom had been getting help and was aware enough to notice it happening.
So Mage, what could have caused the multiple personalities? I mean, what kind of terrible event? If it's, personal, I understand.
I'm not sure of the cause of all of them. In some of the cases she wasn't exactly sure. What she thought was the cause of some turned out to be false memories. She was raped at least once growing up. She was pretty much shipped off to the Philippians for a while that most likely triggered the Philippno one.
I know why an 8th one was starting. She was trying to get away from an abusing boyfriend went into intensive form of counseling where she was gone for over a month and when she got back she finds our home had a huge mold problem resulting from a leaky roof, so we were pretty much homeless.
If i remember right, it's cause by repression. A lotto cases of this is from child abuse. They make themselves a different person to 'leave' the situation.

Yep that's right. Could compare it to the way a little kid would do something wrong then blame it on there imaginary friend, but in this case it's a traumatic event that happened to them and the "blame shift" is subconscious, creating an outlet for the mind to deal with the trauma.
That must have been horrible for her to cause her mind to split it. Is there any treatment/cure or does she just have to live with the fact that she has these seperate personalites?

Treatment takes years of therapy. In most cases full reintegration isn't possible (at least with the current methods). The person will always have this sense of duality. One of the biggest hurtles is getting diagnosed in the first place. There are many who don't even believe this even what's really happening to the person.
There are a number of things a person can do that helps. For instance they have to stop thinking of these different personalities as separate people and realize they are just different aspects of them self.
As for my mom specifically she died in 2005, I think she went into a diabetic coma while sleeping.
Iv read cases where a personallity is allergic to one thing, like penuts, and another is not. Also where one poersonallity needs glasses and another does not.
