Well I have been studying the Civil War, and I agree that slavery is wrong, but a state(or province, whatever) should have the right to secede if they truly do not want to be a part of the country.
When our states decided to secede the North went crazy. People were killing their brothers over the fact that they wanted to leave. Yes slavery is wrong , but a state should still be able to leave.
On that note, I don't mean to brag but we[the South] had a tenth of what the north had, and we still fought for four years. I guess the determination came from believing in freedom. Then again, it all boils down to money.
From a UK perspective, I see no reason why countries like Scotland and Wales, or Northern Ireland shouldn't get their full independence, provided a referendum is held with a decent turnout with a convincing 'yes' result. It's good for them, because they have their freedom from the 'auld enemy' and it's good for us because we won't have to prop up their economy with our taxes.
Seceding from a country is an acceptable right, but in the grand scheme of things it would never be accepted. That being said, I'd say that any area has the right to secede and, well, for the most part become its own nation. The problem with that is that the seceding nation will probably be small and insignificant, and seeing how America lovingly has displayed the use of its money everywhere I'm sure the leftover would probably not be happy. Not to mention, you've got to have one hell of an idea to secede.
Also, if your speaking about the US Civil War, I'd say its important to know that the United States was pretty different from place to place, and North Vs. South meant lots to politics that were stuck mainly more on regionalism than they were on nationalism. Nowadays I doubt that would even be a possibility for the USA, No state really holds enough independence or something that distinguishes itself from another enough to even have the need to secede.
So big deal :S, Sure they can have the right but I doubt its a big deal - They'd end up fighting anyway.
Unless, like, the seceding country is a total loss to the country as a whole and not having them there is just as good as having them there, looking at your view on it, Firefly
Out of all the states, only Texas is allowed to remove itself and become its own country = fun fact.
Succession now wouldn't be as serious as it was back then. The South was basically the food of the nation back then, while the North was the manufacturer of the nation. Succeed one part away, they're both f'ed, period. Now, every state has a little of everything, so if a couple states in the same region decide to quit, it wouldn't be as shocking and horrible than it was back then.
Thelistman, that's a pretty blanket statement and you have no evidence. Okay, Paula Deen, or other Southern T.V. stars have EXTREMELY exaggerated drawls. They do it because that's how the some people Northern states see us, every movie about the Wild West basically paints a picture for how we live and what we wear, etc.
Isn't that because Texas never officially annexed itself or something?? And anyway, I think all states are allowed -- Why would it be hard not to secede, allowed or not?
Anyway, I'm not sure I see it the same way, Freakenstein. Chances are America would be pretty split, seeing as unification is what this country has been all about since... I guess after the Civil War?
I'm not 100% sure that after lots of News it would just die away and, for example, the Northwestern USA becomes its new country. That would be weird, and I'm sure as a whole America would feel the need to take back whats theirs. Then again, it depends on the reason, too. The South and the North were big-time haters of each other before the war, and the fact that they had to give up slavery just ticked it all off.
Fail. Awesome way to stereotype. That failed miserably. Also very disrespectful and closed minded. I take offense.
Can you honestly expect anything else from a hypocrite?
As for secession weather its allowed or not is not important, as the second the state(s) seceded they would quickly be annexed by a country wanting to gain a foothold in the US, however if it was allowed I doubt any state would want to as they would have to set up a new government, military, police force, so on.... Not to mention the united states provides great services to all the states that would cease as soon as the state(s) secede.
I actually am also very interested in this topic. My state, Alaska, has a political party called The Alaska Independence Party (or AIP). Basically, they want a "re-vote" on statehood, because they feel that not all options were given to Alaskan residents at the original vote. They also think that Alaska would benefit by becoming its own nation (personally, I don't agree at all with this). And they aren't an obscure party either- about three percent of Alaskans belong to the AIP. AIP webpage
The only place where I support secession after looking at history anywhere in the world sounds mainly like Quebec, Canada. The entire region alone is 16th in world economy -- And it has to haul ### and lift up for the rest. The polls are very close cutting and I feel that if Quebecs polls topple 50% it should be allowed to happen.
Otherwise, just a re-vote just cuz wouldn't make sense -- And how on Earth would Alaska benefit? More than likely it would Fail.
