It is said that the average human only uses about 10% of their brain throughout their life. What do you think the other 90% or so is capable of?

Yea I know there are hundreds of thousands, if not more of things floating around in our body....so names get long and tedious

Consciousness is a trait of the brain, is it not? It's your level of mental and physical awareness, your sixth sense, if you will.

I would say it is a trait yes. To call it a sixth sense would be confusing since it's how we reflect upon our interpretations of our five senses already!

I think it has to be air vibrations.

Oh! I was just using 'air vibrations' as an example here, air vibrations being the environmental basis of our sense of hearing. Obviously other sensory stimuli and their subsequent processing would affect the brain too.

Oh okay. Then that means there are more possibilities of enhancing the mind.

I always thought that was just a myth. !0% really is a very low number.

Ernie, just about 95% of that did not make a single bit of sense or was relevant to any of this thread.

Just out of curiosity, which part of it did make sense and/or was relevant to the thread?

Actually we do only use 10% of our brain. They have tested it on people and if we could use 100% of our brain we would be able to know everything about our body and we would have a cure for diabetes and cancer by now.

Ernie please. For one you contradicted yourself and two that has nothing to do with the thread.

Where is your evidence? You have no proof. You probably just made that up for God knows why.

Actually, that's just a load of balony...mmm balony. No! Can't be distracted...balony..

Only the Cerebrum is involved with the actual intelligence of the brain and mind. Activating other parts of the brain that can't even get involved with such tasks is meaningless and does nothing. Activating 100% of our brain will do SQUAT.

I came to discuss it because I wasn't entirely sure if it were true, and I wanted to know from the good users of AG, excluding you of course.

If the human brain used only 10% of its capabilities and then they other 90% was suddenly unlocked, the sensory overload would probably be to great and they would most likely die of overstimualtion.

this is a bit of an urban myth. Truth is, we dont know what the other 90% is for, in fact, we still know very little about the brain. Heck... we dont even understand how memorys are stored.

To continue my example of sound stimulation, this is why all the ambitious expectant mothers sit in front of the stereo listening to Mozart symphonies: because it allegedly raises your kid's IQ.

Activating 100% of our brain will do SQUAT.

Like I said before, activating 100% of your brain would most accurately be called a global generalised seizure. Like the epileptic fits you see on TV dramas. They're really not good for you!

I think the take-home message from this thread is that we are interested in the ordered and harmonious function of the brain. Not so much how much of it is in use, but which parts and when.

We could probably enhance the mind if we could somehow blend brain tissue with electronics and insert a computer chip into the brain. A computer capable of reasoning, using logic, understanding emotions, and capable of brilliance. That would be something.
