Does anyone else here actually enjoy math? Most people I know find it boring and pointless. I don't mean you have to get super excited at the prospect of doing 100 homework problems, I'm talking about finding the various mathematical concepts interesting. Or getting a nice sense of accomplishment when you figure out tricky problem. For me, math is the only subject that I try in, even when I don't really need to. This thread is about math in general, becuae I realize that most people on here aren't going to have the same backround. BTW, I am in AP Calc AB (that's the first year of advanced calculus for those who use a different system).
Why do we learn history when there is wikipedia? Why do we learn to talk when we can text? Why do I bike when I can drive? Why do I wake up when I could sleep all die?
You missed the point: knowing history is for noy repeat past's mistakes talking is faster than texting do you bike? Why? What does it means?
Algebra is easy, but I'm trembling when I see I'm doing calculus next month. And trigo, at least advanced trigo kind of ruins my day.
Why we do math?
To judge our abilities. To rank ourselves. To see who goes to the top schools. To see who can get that coveted job. And well, that coveted job may require more math than a computer or calculator. Or did you think Einstein worked his way around using a calculator alone?
I'm just saying that not anyone is gifted for math: I got from 5 to 2 all my life in math class (D to E); it shouldn't be studied so hard before university, when you can choose it if you like it!

Your original point pretty much boils down to "Why do something hard when there is an easier way?" Because the easiest way isn't always the best way, or the most entertaining way. Back to my bike/car analogy: sure, driving is definitly faster than biking (and probably safer). However, there are places I can bike to where my car cannot go. Biking also makes me more physicaly fit, which helps out in other non-bike related aspects of my life, such as hiking or working. The same is true for math. If you ask a calculator the sin of 60 degrees, it will give you some weird number. The right answer is of course (3^1/2)/2, but this is an irrational number, so a calculator can't express it. Math also works your memory and puzzle solving skills, which can be useful in other subjects.
I didn't understand one bit of that. xD Well, I've never actually seen a calculus problem either. Is it required?
Yes, if you ever want to be happy in life you must master calculus. But seriously, calculus is definetly optional, though recommended. Colleges like to see it, for one thing.

It makes life easier. I chose not to do it in high school, so I've had a hard time being accepted into universities. I'm at a county college right now, which in my opinion, is the way to go... Same education, less money.
I take most people do, for I once heard someone on here say "We don't like sports, thats the whole reason we are on this site, to get away from them." So from that I would think mlost here love it, cause nerds love math.
Personally I like math (although I dont like it this year because I HATE my current math teacher) I am the best in my advanced class at it and find concepts before they are introduced and often re-explain formulas, concepts, etc to my classmates. (not bragging... she is a terrible teacher and cant explain well) I especially like problems that require logic, Im good at those =P

Yep, Google is right, most people here are nerds. I admit, I myself am one of the biggest nerds in my class. (I do though do pretty well in sports, one of the best at soccer) Most likely, anyone who denies being a nerd on a site like this is lying because they wish they werent nerds or think it will make them cooler. Being a nerd is the price most people pay for intelligence. I personally believe that although being a nerd is unpopular while at school it pays off with better jobs and more money in the future.
