"Gov. Jan Brewer (R-Ariz.) signed a bill last week authorizing police to question individuals about their immigration status if they suspect they could be in the country illegally."

What do you think about this?

Not only is this a serious violation of civil rights, but it's economically stupid. Do they realize that within weeks there will be a brown skinned US citizen arrested for "looking" like an illegal? So many US citizens will be arrested or questioned about their status, and it will lead to huge lawsuits against the state.

There are some bad illegals out there, but most illegals are not here to wreck havoc. I can't believe we've gone back in time. We're discriminating based on the color of someone's skin. This law is unconstitutional, and should be vetoed!

Sassin, try making informed opinions.

And Firefly, that article is fantastic. I especially like this:

⢠Proof of citizenship. The 14th Amendment and 1798 Naturalization Act establishes who is a citizen of the United States. Neither law, nor any other federal law requires any citizen to carry proof of citizenship.

I would hope that an legal immigrant that is stopped and does not have proof of citizen remembers this.

This is a great law considering I live in Arizona till the "stop anyone that looks like a immigrant" part.

Plus what's funny is that Mexico issued a Travel Advisory for people going to Arizona. Their just sad that they can't enter illegally. Illegal immigrants doesn't know the difference between legal (good) and illegal (bad). Its not that hard to get a Proof of Citizenship. Just fill out papers, know some English, recite the declaration of independence, and pay about 20 bucks. McCain and Arpaio is crying in happiness right now because of this law.

Plus to Janet Naplitano, shut up please. Saying &quotassing this will interfere with businesses and the state's economy" is a bunch of bull crap. You will not be part of this since you left us BILLIONS in debt. What if the illegal immigrant has illegal drugs in a illegal drop house with other illegal immigrants. Is that hurting our economy now?

You talk about them as if they're completely dumb. I'm pretty sure they have some idea of illegal and legal, and anyway, I don't get how that's relevant.

And do you have some sort of source? I don't know much about obtaining citizenship, but I seriously doubt it's that easy, especially for those in poverty.

Yeah, because the majority of illegal immigrants bring drugs with them. Most immigrants come to the U.S. to make a better life, not get arrested.
And from my understanding, the majority of drug traffickers, are just that, traffickers, not immigrants. They don't settle in the U.S.

No, the millions upon millions of dollars spent each year going to seeking marijuana trafficking, etc. is hurting our economy.

And assuming an officer does decide to use this new law to pick on Hispanics, he can't even be punished for it!

That is the most depressing thing I've seen all year...

All parts of our government should be balanced. The police are supposed to represent authority, but authority should be subject to order. There is no order in this law. Basically, the sole thing police have to answer to is their own conscience. It's allowing the police to be exempt from the law.

This isn't how things are supposed to work.

Not to mention, the law is so vague and it is left up to the discretion of the officer. I thought, as you said, police are not supposed to interpret the law, but enforce it?

I hate all laws like this. Here in Britain, I will have to get an ID card as I'm from immigrant stock, even though I was born here. Like totally not cool.

Any legal citizen should be more than happy to prove that they're a legal citizen. For example, my father was a highway patrol officer. He could pull people over if they looked like they were drunk. Then the possible drunkard had to prove that they're not drunk. How is the new law in Arizona different from this?

It's unconstitutional according to the Fourteenth Amendment. It violates due process. Also, being drunk behind the wheel puts others in danger, and can be obviously drunk, like swerving. That makes it probable cause.

Like Quaking just said. It violates the 14th amendment. We are not required to carry around proof of citizenship. And I would be irritated, as a citizen, to provide this information.

What state is this?

I was thinking the same thing as Asherlee, I didn't think someone could be pulled over simply because they looked drunk?

Sadly, it wouldn't matter. They would still be taken to jail.

Wow.........that's just..................c'mon..... and you can't fight back or you get yourself punished g@y bullcrap

I think it's overall a good idea, but we all know that the cops will end up being total bigots on teh matter, turning the bill into something pretty... bad.
