Do you think a tax on fast food would make people eat cheaper, healthier food instead of fast food? America has a very large percentage of "overweight" citizens. Would a national Fast Food Tax solve this problem? Explain why or why not.
f there's one thing the government is short on now, it's money. An extra ten cents on all the big macs'll help, considering how many fast food meals are served each day. It's stupid to use the tax as a healthifying tool, but as a way to get some extra money to pay off the debt, everybody wins. Nobody's gonna notice a ten-cent price hike on a fast food meal.
Taxation gives the government control over what they are taxing. If th government needs money, they can stop wasting our money. We can't allow them to take our money through even more taxes just because they screwed up and wasted money on things such as universal health care.
Soon, if you don't have healthcare, you will be fined.
Someone should have oh it's treason! Dont say it! taken that asshole out of office. Sure, it would have put us in a state of panic, but at least we can recover from panic. We can't recover from universal health care after everyone becomes dependent on it. We should have a choice in what we do for ourselves or not. Should we allow the government to control how many meals we eat a day? Maybe we should be fined if we don't go to the bathroom at least 3 times a day. You know, it's bad to hold all that crap inside of you.
Taxation on fast food would be the government's way of becoming overpowered. They take control over something that doesn't seem like a big deal, then they inch their ways into controlling our lives.
"Sure, 10 cents isn't much."
"Oh, an added 20 on anything with so many calories, okay, not a big deal."
"I'm to goddamn stupid to choose what I can and can't eat, so it's okay if the government puts a limit to how much salt, sugar, and other ingredients are in my food!"
"Hey, fast food is pricey and tastes like crap! Sure, why don't we allow the government to bail out the fast food industries?"
Sure, my examples may not be the route the government is going, but that's how they inch their way into controlling our lives and often how they end up wasting our money.
I am talking about national government. I would not be as against it if these were merely state laws. In that case, I would still fight against such system. At least some states can omit such bogus law.
Everything already has a sales tax. That's good enough. We shouldn't let our government tell us what to do, but we should be the ones telling our government what to do!
Firstly I highly doubt that the tax would encourage anyone to give up their fast food habits, and as we have seen time and again with our government, the tax money would be put to poor use anyway.
That being said I disagree that fast food has in any way contributed to level of obesity in our society. We are living in an age where a very large portion of employment is technical in nature, relegating the scores of masses to sit on their bottoms in a cubicle all day.
We have lost our active healthy lifestyle, we don't exercise and we consume far more calories than needed to give our bodies the proper energy needed for us to do what our lives entail.
You are not going to get fat eating Big Macs and fries, you are going to get fat by eating the wrong types of foods at the wrong times in your routine, and by not getting enough cardiovascular exercise.
A simple tool I use when I train is to load up on carbs in the morning to provide your energy, a small meal for lunch, and lots of protein at dinner with few carbs, as you don't need the energy prior to going to sleep.
Another thing that is contributing is the fact that people are eating less often throughout the day, not realizing that lengthening the time you go between meals actually slows your metabolism and increases the amount of food that is converted to fat.

That doesn't sound like a bad diet. Me I don't really have to worry about gaining weight it to much. I have a pretty fast metabolism, even to the point where if I'm not careful I end up hypoglycemic.
They just make it a little more expensive. They don't take it away. Many of you are saying "Who cares? It's their bodies."
My argument: fast food is bad for you. The government HAS to benefit the greater good. Small government is horrible. The government stopped regulating what loans banks can give to people and raised enormous interest. This is one cause of the recession we are in. Small government.
The government has to solve problems, otherwise what is the point of power if you don't use it? It defeats the purpose. What should the government get involve in?

Even if you do have a fast metabolism you still have to watch your cholesterol.
Making sure we don't kill each other, and making sure other countries don't kill us. That's their only job.

Government isn't all powerful. They aren't even slightly powerful. Any average man could take down the entire government in seconds.
The point is that if enough people don't like them, we can revolt. Guess what? It's in the constitution. The government is there because we put them there, not because they felt like going up there and looking like idiots.
So the second the put taxes on the way people live, they can put taxes on living period. Soon we'll end up with 100% income tax, and everyone will live in a shack with no amenities.

Gawd, I want to flame you so much. THE GOVERNMENT IS TAXING THE FOOD, NOT US. The government GAINS money from people who want to make poor food choices.
The government should make parks, encourage them to get out of the house, and tax fast food. Look at Europe. They have parks every almost every 5 blocks. Belgium has a 20% tax on everything that is made of chocolate. Spain has a tax on food that has a certain number of calories. They don't have many fat people.
European countries and Canada have a strong governments. They have fit people, strong economy, very socialized society, and excellent education and healthcare. Taxes on tons of things. It all comes back to help people.
Making sure we don't kill each other, and making sure other countries don't kill us. That's their only job.
You're not serious are you?

How would that be done?

Actually the Constitution set up the government so that we can resolve our problems peacefully without revolting. That's basis of the democracy system.

Taxes go back to people. Who do you think makes parks? Public bathrooms?
Look at Germany. They have HEAVY taxes, yet the government covers healthcare, education, and cars. They also have pensions.
They're there to keep peace, not make sure we keep ourselves healthy. That's not their job.
How would that be done?
Militia's, quite like the revolution.
Seconds was a bit of an exaggeration, but it wouldn't take particularly long in this day and age.

It also has the revolution fail-safe. If the democratic system failed, we could revolt.

You do realize this is America right? Totally different mentality? No?
We aren't Germany. We're America. We have our own ways and they have theirs. Things that fly and work over there wouldn't necessarily work here, because we are completely different. Their government isn't completely overrun with self insuring politicians who only work for their own.
Taxes go back to people. Who do you think makes parks? Public bathrooms?
Bailouts? Field mice in California? That's not what I'm supporting.
If we are not happy with the way things are run does that not mean we only have ourselves to blame?
Not if they lie.
But in the end, yes. That's why we have to fix our mistakes.
if they tax fast food, making it more expensive to consume. then what will the poor people eat? fast food is generally cheap so people can afford it if they are in a financial jam. Im not talking about mcdonalds only, I mean like cans of spam and tuna also. they fall into the category of food that can be made fast and cheaply.
