Sexual addiction is a pattern of sexual behaviours that are out of control and continue despite negative consequences. As in other addictions, changes in brain chemistry are at the core of the addiction. In sex addiction, the changes are caused by sexual behavior and fantasizing about sex or romantic activities. Sex addiction is a process addiction because no chemicals are taken into the body. Chemical changes occur in the body because of the addicts behaviours. Any sexual activity that causes changes in body chemistry can become and addiction. Even on-line romances become addictive when they are a substitute for reality or a way to escape reality.

Addiction occurs because a person has a "hole" in their soul that they want to fill. Whether it be addiction to; food, alcohol, sex, drugs etc ... Sex addicts are trying to find love that wasnt given to them as, for example, a child.

There is a lot more to addiction then just trying to fill a void. Often there is a real physical effect in the brain causing the addiction. Basically your brain will be fooled into thinking it needs the stimulus it's getting to survive.

There are many people and organizations who do not acknowledge sexual addiction as a valid form of addiction. The whole thing works on electrochemical reactions. You flood the brain with enough of a certain type of chemical it becomes use to those levels are regards it as normal, resulting in the addiction. This can happen either through natural processes such as with sex addictions or through artificially induces processes such as taking drugs.

Its a physical and mental desire to have sex. Again I naturally know some about this because I actually have this addiction...I understand it sounds dumb. My therapist said that pornography at least reduces the possibility that I'm gonna snap and molest or rape someone.

Without sex, you wouldn't be alive. Without sex, the human race wouldn't exist. Sex gives you pleasure as a reward for keeping your species alive. You NEED sex. You can't live WITHOUT sex, or else you're not human.

Saying that you cannot be addicted to something just because it's a basic need or drive, does not mean you cannot be addicted to it. Is a 500 pound person addicted to food? When someone who is grossly obese eats, there is a physical release of endorphins, many of which are also released during sexual activity. You need food, you can be addicted to food. You need sex, but you can be chemically addicted to sex.
