I'm not sure how to phrase this but considering in the majority of marriages in the USA somebody has cheated I think maybe we're naturally polygamist or at least lenient.
Well, no monogamy is not a natural thing at all, we only assume it is natural because it is our societal norm. HOWEVR, monogamy only became something to be enforced due to Western religious ideologies. I am not starting a "Religion is Evil" debate, I am stating a fact.

I disagree. Although I rekon what you say is PART of the truth. Monogamy has ALWAYS been around, just as poligamy has. It actually seem to come down to selection. for example is it more beneficial to run around, spread your seed, have lots of children and guarantee your bloodline goes on without you worrying about looking after the kid? ynow the fatherless kid scenario thats one of the many common themes ALL over the world.
OR
Do you stay with one beautiful woman who seems to make your life better, easier and warmer and have kids, maybe even only one kid, sticking around to make sure your child is brought up in a stable enviroment ready to face a life of challenge/slavery/servitude/eutopia?
It seems that we have elements of both. While we are not naturally 100% monogamous, there are some elements of our instinct that are. It would seem that because there are merits to both that we have evolved a sense that monogamy is beneficial, especially given how long we have been living as a society.
Obviously when we lived in smaller bands polygamy seemed to be a greater benefit as it ensured more offspring, and the women would mate with the best males. As society became more complex and the need to reproduce as quickly as possible lessened, monogamy began to show great merit as it allowed for better upbringing of our youth and led to a stronger, more bonded societal group.
I would imagine porn can help fulfill some of the polygamous aspects of our nature by placing it in a realm of fantasy while still allowing the monogamous aspect to continue functioning in the real world where it's currently useful.
Well, when people think about it from a natural point of view, polygamy is a good thing. However, with some comes a certain psychological point of view that deems polygamy immoral and that monogamy is the true path to happiness. Well hey! For males, that's like living the dream! However it's different for the wives, knowing that the husband you have committed to is also sleeping with other women. Our single purpose in life as animals is to reproduce; no one can argue this natural logic. It is through evolution of our intelligence that has us branched off from the rest of the animal kingdom.
Now, I'm all for separating church from State as much as possible, but if my dream had come true, then monogamy would be nothing more than an opinion.
Ah but therein lies the problem. These countries have religious principles put directly into their law (Islam), which is why in their point of view, polygamy is not so bad. The U.S. doesn't really have so much religious laws anymore, but we are still influenced by it. In the U.S. polygamy is outlawed and frowned upon.

no. while yes it is frowned upon, it is not a criminal offense to have multiple wives. this is covered by the 'freedom of religion' aspect as polygamists are mainly of the Mormon Faith ( correct me if im wrong). there belief is that god wants them to do this, which is why the law cant stop it. honestly, if they are willing to have so many wives and the wives agree to 'share' one husband, i dont see anything wrong with it. its consentual, right? it the religious nuts that have no tolerance of other faiths ( sometimes called evangelicals ) that make things so much more difficult than need be.
MRWalker already posted what is basically my view of this.
Also, I actually don't see the problem with polygamy. The ones involved just need to be okay with it. Personally, I would find it very difficult to be okay with such a relationship, but I don't doubt it can work for some people.
I find very interesting that the vast majority of religious groups practice polygyny, not polyandry. Polyandry is quite rare.
Just tried (and failed) to find some statistics on how common each combination is for poly-amorous relationships... As for religious groups, I do think you're right. Non-religious couples with three people involved, I dunno. There was a fair few women with two men in the documentary I watched about it some time ago...
All religious opinions aside, it is demonstrable that we have the capacity to love more than one person in a romantic sense, so would it be that much of a stretch to imagine finding a partner whom you love, and you both being able to find another whom you both can love, and who can love both of you? Realistically that is all that would be required for a truly polygamist relationship to work, and it does happen.
