all I'd have to do is bring a gun and about 5000 rounds of ammunition. I'd make several trips, you see. one of those trips would include a howitzer and a gun crew. and about 100 howitzer shells.
I could buy as many as I please since I'm a multi billionare. It wouldn't take a lot of small diamonds, but one big one since you can't put them together. I'd just pay for someone to make a giant artifical diamond.
I forgot to include this, but we live in the future. If you want to make a name for yourself, bringing some technology to the past would be an easier way.
And who says one would always be poor while time traveling? Should one bring some form of currency?
You have modern tech. Depending on which time period you go to, you'd find it very easy to kill people.
Would modern law allow you to do such a thing? It's the whole (changing the past affects the future) sort of thing. I don't think officials would allow weapons of any sort because of this and because you cannot defend yourself in that manner. I assume they would send you into the past disguised as the past.
Would you need government permission to travel back in time? Let's just be basic here. In the event you would be able to travel back to any time at any place, where would you go?
Well, if you were to set foot in the past you'd certainly have to disguise yourself. Isn't much use attracting attention to yourself. From there you'll be able to do other things.

This question doesn't imply that only the government has control over time machines, despite that being the realistic scenario if they ever existed. We all assume that we have unfettered access because this question only asks where would we go?
So, let's ignore that and assume that we can go anywhere without restrictions.
No one wants to go back to the witch hunts. If you want to go back to a time period, you need to speak the language, know enough about the culture and customs and you need a way of sustaining yourself. Make a few friends.
I would go back to birth and have memories of all the things up until i traveled back in time to right all the wrong in my life and others life, i was a loner up until the fourth grade would want to fix that and maybe the hurt my friends went through like the death of two of my friends dads, wish i could've been there more
