First: i didn't know where this topic should be, so i thought i put it in the tavern

But i hear from a lot of friends that video games improved their english, and a teacher of mine said: boys who don't do a thing but gaming score low in every subject, except for English. What's your opinion about it? Did you also learn other languages other then English?

I used to play maplestory, and free realms, and runescape, all that stuff. Then I got addicted to flash games. But yes, I'd have to say that it helped my typing a lot, and my grammar. But, it didn't help my english.

For most people, "yes" It's like someone is playing MW2 and they have learned a new word that they never heard of. F***

Wow, this is really interesting, I never would have thought about this subject but it makes sense. I am a native english speaker, but I have learned a lot about history and mythology just playing Age of Empires and Age of Mythology. This is probably because I look the characters up on my own though.

It can and can't. Depends on the game.

Well, I maybe did learn'd English from video games, but I usually learn 'new' English words from Internet/books.
But I usually think in English pretty much these days, and I barely think in Finnish.

That might be bad for me...

Video games made me finish my English classes two years before time in high school. My first tongue's french so you can imagine how much I learned from the sole fact of being an hardcore gamer: back then, all the games where english only...
Heck; I'm bilingual because of video games, thank you Sonic to have spurred my interest in gaming!

Mostly, i guess. My English has advanced throughout the years of gaming experience and talking with other american friends, and listening to music(which is in English), i barely listen to music in my native language ; Spanish.

I've tried so hard to talk a lot of English, but some times, due to the fact that i am indeed, shy, i barely talk any English, But i do certainly talk in English with my fellow older brothers. I do, think that my English is rather fine, my friends say the same, Although i haven't quite talked it much, this year. But i look forward into learning more English.

Does learning new bad words count? :P

Those are like the only words that I've learned through video games.

I guess when I was 4 and I played video games. I learned a lot of new words from video games then but now my vocabulary has been enhanced and does not need any more enhancement... for now.

Halo: CE taught me what a cartographer was.

So yes, I must say they have improved my English.
