...really just a good idea?

HR-5741

I can see both sides here, but I want to know what you think.

That is probably one of the creepiest things I've read. I'm almost sure this bill will die though.

And this is a good idea...how?

Well, it depends on how the program would operate. If it provides jobs, boosts the economy, teaches new skills, helps with medical benefits, I say there is a way to do it correctly.

Look at how many countries have compulsory military and/or labor service anyway.

John,

An opinion should be the result of a thought, not a substitute for it...

I like it, with the exception of me being unfit for combat. So, if I have a boring job, I'll go postal.

Maybe it's not for me.

However, with compulsory military service, we could easily provide all the infrastructure, health, etc., just using the military. The military isn't just a shoot at people all day type thing, and I can see this being massively beneficial.

Although other jobs outside of that, I really don't see the point. You have more than enough applicants for those.

This is unconstitutional. We're citizens of a free country, it should stay that way. I certainly don't want to be forced to drop out of school to work a job I have no say in. I've worked entirely too hard to get myself where I am to have the government take it all away.

This could be used as a military draft which should never happen again in my opinion.

I think it should go ahead. You Yanks can enjoy your service (you all love your country anyway) while I sit at home, in England - in comfort.

Looking at it that way it could be a really good idea. I think the program could really turn an economy around in a recession such as now, which is probably why they've introduced this. Sure some may view it as unconstitutional, but I feel people have a duty to their country and there should be other ways to serve your country other than the military.

Great, we abolished mandatory military (or alternative civil) service about 8 years ago, as a relic from the past... and USA starts doing it again? Draught military are far less effective than professional soldiers. Do you know what it means? Increased death ratio!

New and inventive ways to make people riot. I highly doubt this bill is going to get passed. I have enough trouble getting my guys to get to work on time. Could you imagine if they passed this? Marshal law would have to be declared almost immediately.

you know people of united states America have the right to overthrow their government if they see it as "unjust" according to constitution or something i think.

I would definitely riot over this if it passes

The bill will never pass, but it still sparks good debate.

I mean, it really is very circumstantial and perspective-biased on whether this would be a good thing or not. I do not think it should be anyone between 18 and 42, but merely when you turn 18 you go perform your civic duty for at least 2 years with the option to stay on. I really feel that most 18 year olds are not ready for college or a career anyway. It will give them some time to run around and be crazy. Learn some work ethic, maybe.

On the other hand, I know plenty of people that would quit their day job to go do something like this. Hell, I did not to long ago.

I would rather, instead of forced military labor, have this sort of concept for the criminals. They would be doing something productive, instead of rotting in a jail cell--I'm sure even they'd agree with this...
