A religion is a belief. Atheists believe there is no God. What do you think?

If you don't want the negative connotation of the word atheist educate people in what the word really means and show your really not a bad person even though you are an atheist.

I don't think we need to panic about re naming ourselves to remove any negative connotation, because in the process of doing so we become more like an organised religious body.

I dislike organised religion because it seems like any other business, requiring a perpetual need for its consumers. Sweet teeth keeps coke in business. Man's propensity to sin keeps the Catholic Church alive. Call me cynical, but I don't buy into these new atheist movement to 'reeducate' people. I like to think we atheists are a calm, understated, undercover lot, sustained not by obsessions to impose ourselves as some sort of oppressed minority, but by sustained by and notable for, our philosophical respect for our fellow man and universe.

Undemonstrative. Then again, even Dawkins is a little evangelical for me!

Ya I agree being an atheist just means you're A:an intelligint person who believes in atheism because you don't beleive christians have enough scientific evidence to support there statement that God exists and you feel that atheism does or B:You are a unintelligent atheist, you have a sinful life and cannot honestly call yourself a christian because of it.

I'm not at home at the moment to give this the facepalm it deserves so I will just stick with a fail.

All atheism is is the lack of belief in a deity/s. It's the default position to believing. So it's not a belief in atheism as you stated.

As for your other point you making the assumption such a deity exists and it also completely ignores every other religion.

Sarthra21 said: Atheism is the absence of religion, so how can it be a religion? Atheism is an idea against... Well, just about every faith there is. Which isn't really a bad thing.
I can't agree more with him

Atheism is the absence of religion,

It's the the lack of belief in a deity, not the absence of religion. There is a difference. You might want to read through this thread a bit more.

Still incorrect..
Atheism is the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. Not the belief in absence of a deity, the REJECTION of belief.

I really don't find it that surprising considering the top searches on Google don't even get it right.

Actually I'm pretty sure I do know what it is. The lack of a belief in a deity; the opposite of which is belief, which in no way suggests that atheism is a belief.

this has probably been said already 500 times.

atheism is NOT a religion. Not only does religion require a belief in some kind of afterlife/higher power, but a religion also has a set of dogma/moral codes that come with it.

atheism has none of those things. there is no afterlife, but especially not a higher power or any kind of dogma. In fact, it doesn't even have a moral code, every atheist's moral code is something that they believe in themselves.

i know this to be true because I myself am an atheist.

The difference is atheists each have their own code they came up with, as opposed to being told what your moral code is.

um, alot of religious people are in it for the fellowship, and the freinds, and the other nice people. and yes, they even think for themselves (sometimes).
