Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked an effort by Democrats and the White House to lift the ban on gays serving openly in the military, voting unanimously against advancing a major defense policy bill that included the provision.

Do you feel that the military should keep the DADT policy, or do away with it and why?

what if they added to the DADT to make it to where people couldn't say anything about sexual orientation. like no ones straight, no ones gay, there is no preference. i think that would work. well, sort of.

That would probably be hard to enforce.

holt, do you think people will really resign because of this? Dishonorable discharge is not something you want to have on your record. Do you really think they'll put their comfort before their patriotism? I think they already know that they are working alongside homosexuals, it's just that now the homosexuals won't be punished for revealing that they are gay. That's really all that's changing. I think the men and women in the military will just suck it up and continue to fight for this country that they love so much. No one is forcing them to DATE the homosexual soldiers, they just don't want to be forced to live in the closet anymore for fear that they will get fired.

There is no empirical evidence whatsoever that shows that sexual orientation is relevant to any aspect of military effectiveness (including moral and cohesion).
While on the contrary comparative data from foreign militaries show that when lesbians and gay men, are allowed to serve openly there is no evidence of disruption or loss of mission effectiveness.

The Government should have no role in our sex lifes. They should be free to be in the military.

I thought I answered how I felt a while ago. Yes there will be people who resign but I think alot of people will still carry on with the military.

No prob. I would hope that if they repeal it that at least 99% of the people will not resign.

There was a Military Times poll, it found that 71% of respondents would continue to serve if the policy was overturned, 14 % said they would consider terminating their careers after serving their obligated tours and only 10 % of respondents said they would not re-enlist.

Really? that many people will resign? well that's a shame.

It's different saying "I will resign" from actually resigning. Not many people want to leave the army, being in the army is one of the best jobs.

Well i hope they don't mean it. Well I don't blame them for wanting to leave the army but not for that reason.

@ Everyone

What do you think is the reasoning behind keeping DADT intact, besides this non-issue of morale?

A still deep-seated rejection of homosexuals held by most republican politicians and republicans in general?

Granted...I'll give you that. But is there some other agenda we are missing? I mean I saw the list of the countries that allow gays to serve openly. Then I saw the list of those that still do not allow it. Most were poor, third-worldish countries, besides China. China is communist anyway. So, personally this is a disgrace.

Perhaps it's to do with religion? Or at the very least 'belief'. All of the countries that don't allow open homosexual service seem to have strong religious, social or cultural beliefs. The majority of the countries that don't have anything like DADT have more watered down or secular beliefs and are usually much more democratic.

That's certainly true.
