Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked an effort by Democrats and the White House to lift the ban on gays serving openly in the military, voting unanimously against advancing a major defense policy bill that included the provision.

Do you feel that the military should keep the DADT policy, or do away with it and why?

I feel that it should be done away with completely. Many countries allow people to serve and be open about their sexuality - such as the UK. If you ask any British soldier then I'm quite sure they have no problems with that. DADT is old now - the last decade has seen major changes in the social and cultural attitudes towards homosexuality - almost all of these changes for the better.

I found some information and case studies from other countries, ones that don't have DADT or similar concepts.

I think that repealing it would have a different effect on American soldiers since there would be more Christians fighting for us. Other than that I have no opinion on the matter.

Uh huh - did Jesus not teach loving thy neighbor? Also, since when were British soldiers not Christian? We may be quite a secular society but a large proportion of our soldiers are still religious.

Regardless there would still be quite a bit more Christians serving the American flag.

Sure he did but that does not mean I wouldn't be very uncomfortable working with a gay person.

Why would you be uncomfortable? It's not like they're gonna start coming on to you or anything.

Holt, there are already homosexuals in the military. And I know a lot of gay people in the military. Everyone knows these persons are gay, just don't talk about it.

I would certainly hope not and would not suspect them to. it is the knowledge that you are working with a gay person that might possibly make a person feel uncomfortable but that's just me it really depends on the soldier and I suspect many of them might not like it. Wrong or right.

Pfft, homophobe. Soldiering comes first - a good soldier is a good soldier, regardless of sexual orientation. They are putting their lives on the line for the protection of the same country that all the other soldiers are.

And like I said right or wrong this will effect soldiers.

Didn't you read the things I posted?

# Large-scale resignations from the UK armed forces when the ban on gays was lifted were widely expected in some quarters, - but in practice they did not materialise.
# At least one British army brigadier publicly resigned in protest, citing "strongly held moral and military convictions" but most observers were surprised at how smoothly the new law - which was forced on the UK government by the European Court of Human Rights - was implemented. "There was this expectation that there would be problems, but it just didn't happen. People just got on with their work" Dave Small, ex-Royal Navy

"It's a non-issue... You can be a very good officer, a creative one, a brave one and be gay at the same time" ex-IDF officer and Israeli Consul David Saranga

Avorne I already said there are much more Christians under my flag so Americans would be more likely to resign and possibly have their moral effected.

And those people would be called 'homophobes'. If they're more concerned with someones sexuality than with protecting their country then frankly they aren't good soldiers at all.

I'm not here to debate whether resigning because their will be open gay people in the military is a good or bad thing all I am saying is it will effect people.

How do you know it won't effect people for the better? An ex-soldier here's somebody spewing vile homophobic hatred about gays and or them serving in the army then just walks up "I served with a gay guy, he could take little worms like you down without breaking a sweat - he was as tough as any of the rest of us."

its not about whether its right or not anymore, there are too many people who would hurt them if they were openly gay. this is america, full of racist bigotry, and the army is no exception. this is for the protection of the gays in the armed forces.
