This is the place to discuss the greatest genre known to man: Progressive and the greatest progressive acts known to man.
Don't know what progressive music is? Well, here are some examples of each sub-genre to get started. Note that all genres are awesome, but some are harder to get used to than others:
(First names are links to a youtube videos)
Eclectic Prog -King Crimson -Van Der Graaf Generator -Gentle Giant
Experimental/Post Metal -Tool -Devin Townsend -Ananthema
I quite like Opeth, album 'D amnation', (the only one where they don't growl..).
And Progressive in general seems to be good, though I'll have to listen to more to make a more serious statement.. thanks for the links in the OP, this'll make it much easier^^
Obviously the greats like PF, King Crimson, Yes, etc. I'm more of a prog-metal/neoprog guy . . . Marillion, Fish, Spock's Beard, Atheist, a little Opeth (not my favorite band ever, but not bad), Cynic(CYNIC IS SO ****ING AWESOME THEY'RE MY SECOND FAVORITE BAND AND IF YOU DON'T LISTEN TO THEM YOU'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED AWESOMENESS), Pain of Salvation, Agalloch(to a point), Gordian Knot, and Transatlantic. Not a huge fan of Dream Theater to be honest . . . I don't know, they're all technically very good but they don't mix well together for me.

****ation, and listen to the rest =w= That album is overrated as hell just because they don't growl =_=

Your welcome : D. I hope you enjoy it.
PROGRESSIVE METAL are kindly awesome, with dream theater and more...
DT are awesome. Check out Pain of Salvation if you haven't already U:<
I liek prog music.

Bolded = I like/love. I am looking for Transatlantic's "The Whirlwind"... is it good?
It isn't bad. It's a dash of DT prog wankery translated to a more classic-prog, Yessish level. It's got a lot of Spock's Beard flavor too . . . definitely not bad.
You should go to mediafire or some other legally-gray filehosting site and get both Cynic's Traced in Air and Agalloch's Ashes Against the Grain. They're startlingly innovative, and not in an annoying way - it's all fantastic. Gordian Knot is also amazing.

Gewd, gewd. I've been looking forward for the 78 minute long epic.

Cynic is technical/progressive extreme metal/jazz fusion with a lot of experimental going on, and Agalloch is black metal with post-rock, neofolk, and countless other elements in it. They're both much better than they sound, I promise DD:

Lol, I'll try and see how they sound xP. It's a shame I'm out of iPod space :<

I listened to the album Orchid at about the same time then, sounds quite good too. But I just like ****ation because it's so calm. I listened to it once while driving home on a late autumn's evening in a bus, and hell, it was peaceful
I just saw that Orchid is their first album. Are their other albums similar, or is there one you would suggest listening to?
For Opeth, their best are Blackwater Park and Still Life. Definitely. Their others aren't bad either, but those are the only ones that stand out as really awesome.

They were plainly a more melodic death metal band at first, so yeah they differ highly. They started getting proggy since Still Life (maybe a lil' in My Arms your Hearse =P).
Listen to Alt for he's wise. Still Life and Blackwater Park are awesome. Deliverance is great as well.
Although I don't consider Porcupine tree to be a Heavy prog band, the rest of your assumptions are reasonnable enough. I'm surprised someone knows so much about progressive music nowadays...Other than Alt of course; he's a wiseman. I'm more versed in antique prog like King Crimson, Yes and Genesis before they became Lord of Crapness around 1977.
Harmonium is also a terrific progressive band; it's widely unknown because it's a French group from quebec though.
Yeah, there are a lot of great prog rock bands, you just have to search and peck to discover them. A lot of their best stuff, you'll never hear on the radio, unless it's some of the commercial Pink Floyd and Genesis material.
