This is the place to discuss the greatest genre known to man: Progressive and the greatest progressive acts known to man.
Don't know what progressive music is? Well, here are some examples of each sub-genre to get started. Note that all genres are awesome, but some are harder to get used to than others:
(First names are links to a youtube videos)
Eclectic Prog -King Crimson -Van Der Graaf Generator -Gentle Giant
Experimental/Post Metal -Tool -Devin Townsend -Ananthema
Although I don't consider Porcupine tree to be a Heavy prog band, the rest of your assumptions are reasonnable enough.
Well, they technically fit the bill but they do fit in some other genres. PT is pretty hard to define with a genre y'know >_<
I'm more versed in antique prog like King Crimson, Yes and Genesis before they became Lord of Crapness around 1977.
I'm more into recent stuff actually, but I do enjoy older stuff a lot.
Yeah, there are a lot of great prog rock bands, you just have to search and peck to discover them. A lot of their best stuff, you'll never hear on the radio, unless it's some of the commercial Pink Floyd and Genesis material.
In here, you don't even hear those :<. It's sad man D:
hell yues!!!!!!! possibly the best combination of musicians since dream theater itself!!! good for mike getting into somthing else other then the filth that avenged sevenfold calls "nightmare" what a ****ty album XD
That sounds a lot like a similar supergroup called Transatlantic that's Neal, Portnoy, roine Stolt, and Pete Trewavas. I have two of their albums - Bridge Across Forever and whirlwind. Neither of them are groundbreakingly amazing, but they're good.

xD yeah. I would've murdered the guy if he had become a permanent member in there.

Even though Mike + Neal combination remains, it will probably sound fairly different. It's a pretty interesting combo.
I just made my awesome list of albums I want to get. It's massive o_o. I went to the CD Store yesterday and bought Close to the Edge (Yes), Moving Pictures (Rush) and Led Zeppelin IV (Led Zeppelin) =3. They're all fantastic. Specially Close to the Edge x3. It's one of the best albums I've heard on a good while.
And my dad got The Wall (Pink Floyd) from England, too. It's great as well (I'm listening to it atm) though I'm raging I won't be able to go to Roger Waters's The Wall Live concert :<
Close to the EDge is the 2nd-best album from Yes. IT's awesome. The best is Fragile, I'd say. South Side of the Sky and Heart of the Sunrise . . . wow. Two of the best songs in all of prog in my opinion.
