The U.S supreme court is going to decide soon on Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association. In California it's illegal to sell a minor a violent video game. If you're curious what the bill defines a violent video game as one that one that allows âkilling, maiming, dismembering, or sexually assaulting an image of a human being.â
In my opinion the law is complete bogus. The Bible contains large amounts of sex and violence but banning selling it to minors would create an uproar. We shouldn't treat video games differently.
The government should not criticize on what citizens do. If people were to get hurt because of the havoc they see in video games it is their own emotion and feelings that lead to their own mishaps. Even if playing, watching or listening to violence won't benefit themselves. If they don't like it why would they try to take it on people who does like it.
While I agree completely that it should be the parent's decision.
I think the greater objective here is that children are being desensitized to extreme violence at a very young age. And that is something that really shouldn't be happening. The death of humans and humanoids, shouldn't be viewed as a goal by younger kids. Lets be honest, when we(anyone 16 or over) were 5-6 how many of us looked casually at killing Ninjas, or Zombies, Nazi soldiers, aliens etc. Hardly any.
lol, one thing comes to mind.....Gears Of Halo Theft Auto 5 and 6
LOL omg its terrible! BTW if you dont know what that is, i suggest youtubing it.
This is kinda lame. I always thought that the age on mature games should be dropped, to a reasonable age (15 or so). 17 was always kind of an odd number to me.
Mature is rated 17+ because Adults Only is rated 18+. If both were 18, the rating system wouldn't make sense.
I also believe Mature has different age ratings, depending on the material. Now I could be wrong, but I believe I saw a Mature-rated game that was 15+ and not 17+.

I'm pretty sure you are =P
Although it's legal to say M games to people under the age of 17 (of course I could be wrong about that) it's a basic rule in the industry that you don't. Also frank you might be thinking of other countries' rating systems.
If you are alone and want to buy Mature-rated games, you have to show some ID, much like how you wanna go into an R-rated movie without a guardian.
And frankly, if guardian's buy M-rated games for their children, they are basically saying "I understand that this is a mature game and by buying this game, I am exercising my right as a parent to allow them to play it. Therefore, I cannot complain about my children playing them on any aspect, because I bought it for them."
well in Australia they dont have an R rating for video games so all the good games get altered like the GTA's get less violent and Gorey and stuff and we dont get many good horror games i find this very distressing.
should we make it illegal to sell books that have violence in them? I don't think so. Should we not allow children to watch tv shows that have violence in them? I think not. So why should we not allow minors to play violent video games?
i could care less as my mom is with me to pick up games anyways (Cause the closet gamestop is on the other side of town and i dont got a car) even if i dont got but 2 years till im 18 so i wont be a minor for THAT long

I fully agree.
I dont think kids should play games with extreme violence or gore, but thats my prerogative as a parent of my child. I can say to other parents "isnt letting your 10 year old play dragon age or saints row 2 a little much" but I cannot force them.
