Today is Rememberance Day, also known as Veteran's Day. Today marks the 92nd anniversary of the end of World War One, also know as The War to End all Wars. Today is a day where we bow our heads in solemn respect for those who have died fighting for our countries throughout the years. May their memory never fade, lest we forget.
From the American Revolution to the current Wars on Terror, whether or not you support them; the soldiers, marines, airmen, seamen, and coastguard's deserve our utmost respect. May you remember the men who died in the wars of your country.
Bahh, war goes on and so does life. I hate that so many people lost their lives but it's hard to see the point in Remembrance Day when it does nothing to change things - it only cements past conflicts in peoples minds. I'd rather we all just supported charities like Help For Heroes instead - they help the soldiers of past and present.
Is there a problem with this? My great grandfather fought and lived through Operation Overlord, or more commonly known as D-Day. Should those who have died be merely forgotten in the pages of history?
That's what Armistice Day is, Avorne--remembrance. That in and of itself is the point.
Sent into battle to aid strangers in need Gain independence, our forces will lead Final solution when all others have failed Liberation is coming our path has been laid
We remember the fields, where our tanks held the line We remember our brothers in arms
Marching ashore, our target awaits Facing resistance, forces driven by hate Protecting civilians, while fired upon Rules of engagement, our restrictions are gone
We remember the sea, where our ships broke the waves We remember our brothers in arms
Leaving home, set to sea Was this really meant to be? See the shore of our home fade away Facing blood, facing pain Have our brothers died in vain? Many lives has been lost on the way When the war, has been won And our march home begins What awaits has not yet been revealed What was won? what was lost? Will our deeds be remembered? Are they written on stone or in sand?
So you see, there really is importance in remembrance. If we didn't remember, then our sympathy, acknowledgment, and respect for those that fought would be lesser or even gone. It's a time for prolonged healing to take place.
Not forgotten - they should be remembered as good soldiers. People are all too quick to point out who they were soldiering against though. People treat war like some great thing that makes a person into a hero - I think it can do quite the opposite.

War does not make people heroes, but it may show the world a man's true colours. Some men are heroes, though, but I am not one to say who is and who isn't. I respect all who have fought and all who have died. I won't deny that I hold a pride in my herritage though.
I know my heritage and I hate it with every fibre of my being. War is a shameful act and I am disappointed with my ancestors for being a part of it. I try to distance myself from it as much as possible and, thank God, if they bring back compulsory service in the army - I will NOT serve my country as an instrument of war. I am a scholar, not a fighter.
And you can't be both? A scholar who isn't a fighter, in a war, will die and be forgotten. A fighter will fight and be remembered for what the did as a whole, veterans day exists to honor them. One who is both will survive and continuing to make a mark on society long after the need to fight is over.
War is a shameful act
There's a difference between what is and what should be; I agree war is horrible and generally it can be solved in a diplomatic manner. But war is reality, war exists and no amount of name calling will prevent that.
I never said that - I just said that I wasn't a fighter.
I'm not arguing the existence of war - I'm arguing that Remembrance Day is really rather pointless, it changes nothing and only seems to dredge up old memories and troubles. The basic premise is good, honouring those who lost their lives in war, but more could be done to focus on the soldiers of today - rather than those of the past. We can do nothing for the dead - we can at least try to help the living.
Is war really necessary? Thinking about it, I don't see how there was ever a war that was absolutely vital. Humans manage to get themselves into stupid messes or do stupid things and that ends in war - if we weren't so stupid then these things wouldn't happen.

WWII? It was probably the closest thing to a vital war the human race has achieved, no?
Just remember that without others willing to stand up in defense of you, other 'fighters' would have long ago taken away your freedoms. I think that all too often people forget that there will always be those who wish to take what someone else has, and are quick to berate the very people who defend them.
