Words like european, american, satanic, white metal are in general more adjetives than mere genres and "Euro-metal" is so ambiguous.

DragonForce is plain Power Metal.

Now, sometimes this kind of words are actually genres because of many bands defining a trend like USPM (us power metal) that is more.. &quotower" than european "melodic" power metal or the scandinavian black metal, with more anti-christian stuff.

I haven't heard a lot of anti-christian Power Metal, to be specific none at all.

power metal is predominantly from Europe, mainly Germany and Finland. there only 2 notable power metal bands from the US (Iced Earth and Symphony X) and their styles are harder and "thrashier" than other power metal bands.
as for anti-Christian power metal, I'm sure every power metal band was a few songs that go against Christ, the trick is to not let it bother u

Scandinavian bands with anti-christian lyrics are probably mostly Folk Metal bands like Finntroll.

Yeah, I think the distinction between US Power Metal and European/Melodic Metal makes sense; like you said more as different trends/tendencies rather than different genres.

You forgot Kamelot. They're American, though they imported Roy Khan from Norway. They have a much more "European" style than Iced Earth and Symphony X, though.

I heard of other strange metal designation.. what about doom metal and ghost metal? I know that Virgin Black is often called doom metal (actually, wikipedia says doom/gothic/symphonic metal). Are those really genres?

Doom metal is absolutely a genre. It was actually one of the first metal genres - early Black Sabbath is classed as doom. It's typically very sorrowful and droning, either with clean vocals or growled vocals or both, and often very droning and slow-paced. Doom metal is awesome.

Anyways, metal is still a secondary genre to most, so it seems apt it should ahve sub genres. It is still a new type of music develpoing

Even if the genre has been related to the underground, from time to time has got success into the media; lately more than before the metal culture is recognizable in the daily life. The genres come from history (innovative and influential albums), and this happen in every kind of music as well. By consensus, Heavy Metal music began in 1970 with Black Sabbath album Black Sabbath

Two rock songs can sound completely differant and still be consedered rock

Rock has many genres too, more than Metal for sure and they got a reason to be: Acid, Alternative, Blues-Rock, Country-Rock, Garage, Gothic... etc etc etc

People get black metal and death metal mixed up a lot, though...

Black: Fast tempos, shrieked vocals, highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, blast beat drumming.
Venom (1981 - Welcome to Hell) . Mercyful Fate (1983 - Melissa) Hellhammer (1983 - Satanic Rites) . Bathory (1984 - Bathory)
Burzum
Dunkelheit
Death: Heavily distorted guitars, tremolo picking, deep growling vocals, blast beat drumming, minor keys or atonality.
Venom (1981 - Welcome to Hell) . Slayer (1986 - Reign in Blood) Possessed (1985 - Seven Churches) . Death (1984 - Death by Metal)
Morbid Angel
Maze of Torment

I would mention Manilla Road, Manowar, Metal Church, Virgin Steel, Jag Panzer and Helstar too.

I was talking about Norwegian black metal bands like (Euronymus)Mayhem or (Vikernes)Burzum [the latter killed the former], and everything that happened with the church burning.

I'm fully aware of what black and death metal are. I was just calling out someone for incorrectly classing Dimmu Borgir as death metal. Also, Reign In Blood is thrash metal, not death metal, though it was a big influence on the death metal genre.

Also, nice job copying and pasting those definitions of death and black metal from wikipedia to make yourself seem like more of a music expert. Bravo.

. . . double post.
