A lot of the subgenres are fundamentally and notably different from each other. That could possibly be one of the main reasons.

What do you mean? Honestly I prefer some of these subgenres.

technoscreamo is quite enjoyable. Bands like Brign me the horizon and scary kids scaring kids, make a very nice sound this way.

Anyways, metal is still a secondary genre to most, so it seems apt it should ahve sub genres. It is still a new type of music develpoing.

Many songs from the metal genre sound very different from eachother. So they have to be differtiated. Examples are:
Power Metal-Dragon Force.
Death Metal-Necropalis
And so on................

A new type of metal is a capella metal which Van Canto does nicely. Just now listened to one of their songs

All of the subgenres are different from each other, and have their own characteristics. Take Progressive Metal and Thrash and you find it hard to call them the same genre, yet they're both metal.

Well, the reason we have sub-genres, like some people have already mentioned, is because although they have metal like characteristics, they have their own unique ones as well. Just about every genre (if not all of them) have sub-genres.

Im pretty sure this has been answered. a lot. but there are very distinct differences even between similar subgenres.

Genghis Tron is drastically different from Mastodon which is different from Russian Circles which is different from Electric Wizard but all of them can be considered progressive in their own rights.

it does kinda get annoying trying to classify the ones that do a lot of crossover stuff though, ill give you that.

How are either of those bands even slightly related to techno?

Metal has subgenres because its a varied genre in itself. Not every metal band will be going half the speed of light, screaming, or owning and using a turntable.

To use a food-based analogy - there are many types of cheese that each have different colours, textures and flavours. Of course, they're all still cheese - but we have different names to distinguish the specific characteristics of the cheese.

If you wanted subgenres gone, it's like removing genre's at all. You can't define certain music. I, for one, like Celtic or Viking Folk metal like Ensiferum, Equilibrium or Eluveitie (ironic, 3 E's). If I search or debate music like that, it search for Celtic or Viking metal (as it is Folk in itself already). It would have been hard to search for certain kinds of metal, just like when we wouldn't have had any genres at all.

i disagree. I think there are lots of different songs that fall under "metal" but are more similar to other metal songs than others... and can therefore be classified a second time based off of those similarities.. hence sub genres...

under the same logic you could propose that there are no genres of music.... its just music

Is this the same as this, or even this?

Hopefully I got those links right . . . .

Anyways, metal is as diverse as the people that play and listen to it. It's also incredibly annoying and creates huge rifts between fans.

Also, you might find entirely different crowds at some performances of a genre versus others. It's interesting.
