I recently received an iPod Touch from my dad for Christmas. It is refurbished but it works just fine. It is a third generation iPod with a 32gb memory card. On the version, though, it reads 4.1, so I don't really know what that means.
I tried jailbreaking my iPod Touch on BlacRa1n. I opened it on my computer and then plugged in my iPod to it. I clicked on the Windows and it downloaded but than said asd.ll error. I thought it wasn't compatible with my iPod Touch due to the version so I decided to use LimeRa1n. I got passed entering recovery, which was what one of the tutorials read but that's it.
It said in the message box "HOLD HOME + POWER" so I did that. Then It said "RELEASE POWER BUT HOLD HOME" and I did that. This message came up that said, "RETRY: HOLD HOME + POWER" and I kept doing that but it wouldn't leave. Finally, I decided to abort. My screen was stuck on the image a USB jack being connected into iTunes.
I googled everything and all I can find is the advice to hold down the home + power button and it should work, ut my problem is different. Theirs are stuck on the Apple Logo while mine is stuck on one of the steps to jailbreak.
I saw on a YouTube video by CNET on how to jailbreak and it said to download the program from your iPod Touch or iPhone. Is that what I should've done?
What should I do? When I enter restore it does this two hour update to version 4.2 that, from what I've read, drains battery life. I don't want to have to return it or lie about what happened to it. Help!
Alright, well first your pretty stupid for tryign to jail break it.
Actually......thats all I have.
It's stupid for thinking is stupid to jail break an Ipod. It's completely legal and safe if you know what your doing. I have linux running on my Ipod thanks to clever people that are sick of Apples false restrictions on technology.

You most likely screwed up here by not following the instructions. clearly. It's pretty specific in what you press. I know I made the same mistake the first time.

You can always find a older update to revert to. You can't return a jailbroken Ipod that's a fact, you voided your warranty. It's a price you pay for freedom.
Is this even in the right section? I didn't know where I shouldn't posted this. There is no Techy Forum.
Probably the programming section would of been better, people there are generally more knowledgeable about tech and less judgmental in technology or languages they don't understand.
There are tons of things I should've done, but how do I fix it?

I read the CNET Jailbreak method and it said it was legal.

What do you think I did wrong? I'm worried that I used LimeRa1n on a 3g iPod Touch. I don't know if the process is the same. What did you do after you made the mistake? I'm thinking about trying to jailbreak it again, only using BlackRa1n, even if the picture is frozen. I found out what asd.ll meant.

I know it voids the warranty, but if the refurbished iPod is not YET jailbroken, I can still return it, right? Also, I was reading online that you can't downgrade from version beyond 3.1.

I remember one time I posted something there about flash it didn't get read for 4 days. That section was a ghost town when I lasted visited.
Just continue restoring it. I'll be fine.
It doesn't restore. It updates for like two hours and then I don't know if it restores. I'll try it though.
I'm leaving to another party in an hour and if I leave it there, my dad might see it and ask me what happened.
Anyway, thanks for the help. It's not much, but it assures me that I could fix it.
I just checked and it says Restore and Update. I don't know if that means it will Restore first or update first because it seems as if it is updating first.
Just a bit of information. It's practically impossible to brick your Ipod. I've never managed it or heard anyone successfully manage it. So the most that someone can do is get lost and confused.

Probably somewhere in the button mashing sequence.

Then you might be able to return it. There is no point of having an O.S. below 3.1.

Yeah sometimes, especially if people think your just copy pasting code or it's something obvious.
my dad might see it and ask me what happened.
Well your technically updating it right?
Anyway, thanks for the help. It's not much, but it assures me that I could fix it.
You can.
During the updating, it said "This iPod is in Recovery Mode. You must first restore it to access iTunes." What could that mean?
just because something is legal doesn't mean you should do it. This just serves you right for trying something that apple doesn't support and they won't fix it because as soon as you tried to jailbreak it the warranty is dissolved
You may encounter the following symptoms while updating or restoring your iPhone or iPod touch: * iPhone or iPod touch continually restarts but never displays the Home screen.
No.
* An update or restore did not complete and the device is no longer recognized in iTunes.
No. Well. It says the iPod can't access iTunes.
* iPhone or iPod touch stops responding, showing the Apple logo with no progress bar or a stopped progress bar, for over ten minutes.
No. It shows something else.
If this occurs, you can place the device into recovery mode and attempt to restore the device again. If iTunes displayed an alert with an error code, see this article before attempting the steps outlined here.
It is in recovery. I'm trying to restore it.
Note: In certain situations, an iPhone or iPod touch will automatically go into recovery mode after an update or restore issue. If your device is already in recovery mode, you can attempt to restore using iTunes.
I am updating it, not so sure about the restoration.
Use the following steps to place your device into recovery mode. If the device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the the iPhone or iPod touch to turn off.
No red slide appears.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPhone. When you reconnect the USB cable to iPhone, the device should power on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure the battery has some charge and then start with step 2 again.
This doesnât appear.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
I held the Power and Home button for ten minutes and nothing happened.
6. If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
I tried it but I couldnât get past step 4.
When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.
I did sync the music, but it is not the first time I erased all my data.
I'm just going to wait until it is done updating. I'll see if it is being restored. Yeah, I heard bricking is extremely rare, but it has happened. You would have to jailbreak it so many times, download so many songs with the file being over 9mb each and a bunch of stuff. Anyway, I read that recovery is in the hardware, while jailbreaking is in the software so it is always possible to fix it, but you can't ask someone from Best Buy or Apple to fix it. The only way to fix it, is yourself, and that's what my problem is.

True

He knew and accepted it. Apple doesn't support a lot by choice. They care about money. They are not interested in you doing things that they don't like and might cost them money.
It's just too much work for me to ever jailbreak it. They always fix and come out with a new release, so why bother?
Don't understand. Once you do it you don't have to do it again unless you want an useless update that you will be eventually not permitted to download due to iphone X coming out.

Let me get this straight your Ipod is in recovery state and you were able to sync the music? Also what's updating is should tell you it's downloading the newest firmware for the restore.
You would have to do weird things for it to brick. Like intentionally inject code into special areas of important source files to be able to do it. So I wouldn't worry.
Recovery and jailbreak is are both software. Hardware would be you opening the Ipod up and soldering it or something.
