I was watching Bill Maher the other day and one of the guests said that the Catholic Church as a whole should be charged with organized crime because of what the Catholic Priests did recently.
I thought about it and I suppose they could, but why do you think they haven't?
Getting freaky with alter boys. The current Pope helped to cover up and protect those who did it as well. In many cases these priests were just shipped off to a new church to avoid conviction and giving them the chance to do it all over again.
As for why this religious group or at least the heads of this group haven't been charged I don't have an answer for. Though I'm sure the Pope can be brought up on far more charges than just that.

I remember someone trying to get an arrest warrant for the pope if he entered whatever country it was, but I don't know what happened beyond that he obviously wasn't arrested.
The Pope certainly does have power and influence, doesn't he? Were he to go down, there would be plenty of...nasty things from those that support him. On the charge of, quoting Mage, "getting freaky with alter boys", it should only be the individuals who committed the act, not the Church entirely. However, (attempting to) covering up the acts is a crime in and of itself, something the Pope should not walk away from.
Meh, the pope is to powerful. He has a huge bank at his backing (the Vatican Treasury) and his own personal cops (the Swiss guard). If anyone tries to condemn him, he could have himself out of jail and the prosecutor in jail within a week. I am not condoning his actions, or the actions of the priests who "got freaky with alter boys", but this situation is not particularly new, so who is going to do something about it now?
Also, I am going to leave this post with a rude and probably disturbing joke...
Q: How do you get a nun pregnant? A: Dress her as an alter boy...

Since the charge would we about organized crime, the leader of the organization would be charged, along with all the followers.
Now, nobody has brought up what I though they would bring up, about how the intent as a whole was to commit a crime. I don't know of that is necessarily needed to be proven, but does it have a factor in the question about the Cardinals and the Pope being convicted or not.

The above isn't organized crime. It's child molestation. The individuals themselves did it, not the Pope. The Pope, however, tried to cover it up, along with other officials. The Church shouldn't all be charged with something, because not all of them were involved.
Than the Pope, along with multiple bishops and archbishops is charged with aiding and abetting or accessory.
The problem here would be the 1 billion+ Catholics scattered across the world, I mean face it, as much as people say that there is a separation of church and state, when you bring up charging multiple religious leaders with crimes, most people with the power to do it will find themselves in need of a spine.
Yes, someone said someone tried to get a warrant for the pope. I think I heard that somewhere, but the pope is untouchable, allegedly do to the Vatican being a sovereign state.
Having said that, I say war with the Vatican!
....One more thing, the pope song fits well here, but 90% of it would be censored, so I am not going to bother posting it...
Just to clarify; the actions he is referring to is how Catholic priests sexually abused(either forcible **** or statutory ****) the altar(not alter) boys. Here's a link for that. Also; there are a lot of accusations floating around that the Vatican practically let these molesters go.Here's some backup for that, so it's not just floating out there. And as for your actual question? Well, prepare to be pissed. Joseph Ratzinger, aka Pope Benedict, was granted immunity from charges regarding the molestation by none other than former U.S. President George W. Bush. Have fun hitting your head on your desk. When you're done with that, you might as well watch this and once you've done that, you will proceed to continue hitting your head on the desk. And please enjoy the following; it is a quote from Italian comedienne Sabina Guzzanti.
within 20 years the Pope will be where he ought to be â" in Hell, tormented by great big gay demons, and very active ones, not passive ones.
But didn't the Pope apologize, not cover up the crimes?
Now, the argument for organized crime, I guess, would be that since the Catholic Church is an organization, and since the members of that organization committed crimes, then the organization should be charged.
The argument saving the Catholic Church would be that the intent for the organization, as a whole, was to spread their beliefs, not sexual molest children.
There is too much grey area in this case and that's what I wanted to talk about.
