I'm not saying the guy wasn't a Great Guitarist, He deffinatly had huge influence on Music and his improvs were great. But, to be honest, I don't think he's thee Single greatest guitarist ever, he's way up there, sure, But not the greatest.
I know I'm going to get some bad feedback, but I can take it.

well see i kinda agree with you to a certain extent.

the greatest guitarist is a highly debatable topic because it depends on what criteria you put into it.

technically skilled, no he is not, buckethead or shawn lane is plain and simple, theres not much argument to it.

now under my criteria (technical skill, time in which played, and over all influence)

jimi is probably number two behind eric clapton. his influence is far beyond any others in my oppinion. then probably like stevie.

He paved the way for heavy rock with his guitar riffs, redefined psychedelic rock, and his guitar solos, along with Chuck Berry and B.B. King, were some of the first ever. The Doors said that most of their guitar solos were influenced from Jimi Hedrix's. Light My Fire actually has some subtle similarities with . . .And the Gods Made Love.

I wouldn't say he is bad, but because he was an extraordinary guitarist, black, and died from a drug overdose, they help is status as one of the best.

Personally, he is in my top 10. Rolling Stone's list was completely off.

How the hell is Kurt Cobain in the top 20? He made great music, but some people definitely need to be a bit higher up than him.

I agree with you delos. One thing you have to know though is that Jimi taught himself to play guitar. Which makes me like him more.

Well of course, aren't you?

Rolling Stone's list was completely off.

Yeah, Kurt should have been...Maybe around 20-35. He had some great melodies, but they're in the "I can learn that in an hour" Skill
level.

Kurt was a great guitar writer, someone who wrote totally offbeat melodies that were ahead of its time, but yeah, the skill level is low. Jimi, in my opinion, was a flamboyant showboater, and he could do things with a guitar that most players could only dream of doing. Unfortunately, he died in his prime as his guitar playing was getting more and more intricate, so we'll never know the full extent of what that gifted man was capable of.

I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, I love Nirvana but they were grunge. Grunge means dirt. Their voices were raspy, their lyrics pained, and the music distorted. Bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Bush, and Nirvana just weren't made to be revolutionary.

I have to disagree. Kurt was a great songwriter, not such a great guitar player. Excuse me, his guitar playing was fine, but the songs that he played were beginner. Also, what makes it ahead of its time? The Kinks were ahead of their time, but not Nirvana.

According to fellow Seattle bandmates, he learned most of his acrobatic stage moves, a major part of the blues/R&B tradition, including playing with his teeth and behind his back, from a fellow young musician, Raleigh "Butch" Snipes, guitarist with local band The Sharps.

Wikipedia. He pretty much just learned what other musicians did, improved on it and just happened to become famous for doing it. Well, Jimi Hendrix was the one of best, but I'm almost certain that his early death had some effect on how people saw him.

you can't say definitivly whether he is the gretest ever or not, that's a matter of opinion. So I'm not sure what your premis is, the title of the thread is he's over rated, yet your opening comment says "deffinatly had huge influence on Music" and "He's way up there". I'm not sure where you're going with this...

@Cranium
Someone can have big impact on music and still be not so great at Guitar. While we are on the subject of Kurt, he started the Grundge craze in the '90's, but as I said before, low skill level.

I see much ignorance in this thread...

If you are a guitar player or even have any sense of guitar playing you would understand the reasons that make up the essence of why Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest guitarists of all time...

Case Closed

[quote]hes saying hes amazing in every way in form just not number one

if that's what he's saying then why is the title of the thread, "Kimi Hendrix is over rated"? Saying Hendrix isn't the #1 all time guitarest is not the same as saying he's over rated. I might agree that he isn't #1, but Hendrix is certainly not over rated...

actually it is. over rated means that there more highly aclaimed then they should be, if you dont think that hes number one while a good other chuck of the community does, then you think hes over rated
