Oh, sorry about that, I was just getting in some target practice.

It is quite a mystery though and it'll be interesting if we can find out why this is happening - I heard fireworks or weather conditions as two possible suggestions but considering that more birds have been falling over the past few days I'm starting to wonder...

I also read about some people blaming it on fireworks but then I wondered why on the fourth of july the US bird population doesn't nose dive. Listening to the weather people discuss it it seemed they thought lightning or hail might have done it. Im skeptical of the first option merely because all the birds would be found cooked to a crisp.

It's not that unthinkable; if they died by fireworks, it's not because of being hit; it's because of the long time effect of stress. At least that's what I heard. And thinking that they were scared away by banging flashlights all night long, I consider stress and exhaustion as a reasonable cause.

I find it hard to believe fireworks can be the cause of 5,000 birds falling from the sky. I could be wrong!

I believe it said the birds suffered physical trauma. Perhaps they were hit by something?

i don't know if it has ever been at this large of a scale... or if the virus is even functionable at this cold temperature (mosquito's aren't out and about that much atm... and they carry it...) but the west nile virus has been known to afflict birds... or maybe it could be some other type of avian epidemic that's exclusive to that type of bird

From one of the comments on there.

"A blog I read said there were tremors in the area before the birds crashed to the ground. I wonder if its a possibility that these are earthquake warnings?"

If someone could confirm this, natural gases being released could explain it. I also remember hearing about a bunch of fish that died near there as well, which could also be explained by earthquake activity.

true Mage... but that would also explain the fish... but i wonder if a tremor would do anything to mess with the local electro magnetic field?... i do know that birds are very sensitive to that... i wonder if that would've made them disoriented and caused them to lose coordinated motor function and fall

I heard there was a possibility that it was a high altitude hail storm. It just sounds like a panic-proof story to me though.

The weather reason sounds reasonable, but what killed the fish?
