Well, I was searching to see if this was already made, but the searches didn't show a thread with my idea so here it is. I am making this thread so we can have a typical tavern discussion thread for all things science! Basically, a thread for everything science! Ranging from discussions about laws and theories, scientific debate, breakthroughs, discussion about new scientific breakthroughs, certain scientists/philosophers, and all that good stuff!
So go out there and let out your inner science! ;P
To get us going somewhere I'll start: what do you think the future holds for technology? I think our knowledge will allow us to overcome the obstacles thrown at us in the future, I mean, we have discovered so much and have come so far!

Kelvin is minus 273 degrees Celsius

You forgot to include 0 in there. By the way, straw splits are unnecessary. The corrected version of the quote is:

0 Kelvin is minus 273 degrees Celsius.

Some scientists a little while back proposed a theory that the universe was getting hotter and this would eventually stop time. I don't remember the name of the theory, but what do ya'll think of it?

I think it was that it's getting colder. because to stop the molecules they need to reach 0 kelvin.

I'm sure it was hotter. If anybody else has heard of this theory, could you tell us? If nobody has ever heard of this, feel free to change subjects.

What's weird is that in soccer there's a kick called the knuckle kick. What happen's is the ball moves left to right. According to physics it's impossible but actually it i. Basiclly like breaking rules of physics. By the way Roberto Carlos (a soccer player) scored a goal 180 degrees to the goal so he was allined with it he according to calculations he had less then 2 percent chance of making it in and he made it in. Is this humanly impossible.

Actually it's not at all impossible. The knuckle kick is merely causing the ball to 'wobble' due to variations in the pressure exerted on the ball by air resistance. The seams on the ball cause increases in pressure during the rotation which, due to the speed of the ball, affect the trajectory.

When you get into the spinning of elastic spheres, every imperfection affects the trajectory. Basically, the ball is bent in when it's kicked and a spin is imparted at the same time. As the ball bounces the force around it, it gets thrown side to side, up and down or a simple curve. I have a very close friend that is amazing at soccer. I'll ask him if he knows more about it.

I suppose you are talking about the Big Crunch. Essentially, the contraction of the universe would increase the density and this would consequent in the rise of temperature of the universe.

While this is theoretically possible, current cosmological models of our universe have determined that it is 'flat', and due to that it will not end in a 'Big Crunch', but rather in the entropic death of everything. Basically this means that there is no end to the universe and it will continue to expand until, due in part to the second law of thermodynamics, all energy will be so dispersed that there will be no more matter or energy worth noting at all.

Heat death of the universe, I assume? That's interesting.

Although, I'm still in the dark regarding the shape of the universe. Could you provide a reference to any article relating to the same?

No problem. The first is a summary article regarding the WMAP findings, the second is an hour long lecture by Dr. Lawrence Krauss. If you have the time I highly recommend the video. Absolutely blew my mind.

Article from NASA explaining the WMAP findings

A great video explaining the nature of our universe

Yes, that was the theory I was thinking of. Thank you, Walker.

Oh. so it's flat. I thought it expanded like a ballon. Did it spin itself flat?

I don't think it spun flat. If it did and it was originally spherical right after the Big Bang, I see weird things happening.

So.... mabye it parted at one point in the sphere and it flaten out. like a globe.
