Well, I was searching to see if this was already made, but the searches didn't show a thread with my idea so here it is. I am making this thread so we can have a typical tavern discussion thread for all things science! Basically, a thread for everything science! Ranging from discussions about laws and theories, scientific debate, breakthroughs, discussion about new scientific breakthroughs, certain scientists/philosophers, and all that good stuff!
So go out there and let out your inner science! ;P
To get us going somewhere I'll start: what do you think the future holds for technology? I think our knowledge will allow us to overcome the obstacles thrown at us in the future, I mean, we have discovered so much and have come so far!

Oh. so it's flat. I thought it expanded like a ballon. Did it spin itself flat?

Sorry the analogy can be a bit misleading. You have to think of the surface of the balloon as a two dimensional representation of the three dimensional universe. The surface of the balloon is stretching in two directions. With the universe it's stretching in three dimensions. The third dimension in the analogy would be equivalent to a fourth dimension in our universe.

What do you guys think about ligament regeneration? I've read a bunch of articles on limb regeneration, and I feel that limb/organ creation is not all that far away.

I've heard a bit about it. Are you yalking about stem cells or rats?

Yep, stem cells. In this one account, some guy got his finger chopped off. Well, his cousin (some family member...) was a scientist in this field. Well, he made this powdery substance, and the dude's finger regenerated, fully, and flawless.

Quite amazing!

Yes it is. I wonder to what extent it could regenerate? It seems that it can extend past the end of bones and start a new bone. Could this possibly regenerate an entire arm?

"Flat", in this context, basically means that it has no limitations in any direction. It can continue on infinitely in any given direction from any given point.

I would think it could, although it may not heal perfectly. A finger being regenerated perfectly is amazing, but it is generally quite small. As for an entire limb, I would assume it would heal completely, just perhaps not perfectly...

Hurray! I found Link to the story. Although, I could of sworn my teacher said this guy lost either half or all his finger... Oh well, half an inch is still miraculous!

Debunked

You'll notice the finger that was regrown wasn't actually missing.

Well then, [url=http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/05/26/regrowing.body.parts/ whole finger for ya[/url]

The powder regrew a finger, not the top, not the nail, the whole thing.
Deny it if you must, but I have watched a documentary on I believe the same thing... Might have been a thumb though, has been a long time. O.o

I decided to make a Table of Contents since our 'lil threads seems to be getting more people to post in it at times... Oh keep in mind that these are the main topics, as there are sometimes random posts leading to a 1-2 comment discussion...

Well, they have created organs that function properly too. Maybe I'll go get some more info when I'm not as busy...

Would the shedding of positrons from antimatter as electrons are shed by matter be electricity or antielectricity?

I'm still calling bull. This link doesn't state that the man regrew his finger from the treatment only that it was tested. I also find it odd that there seems to be nothing about this amazing breakthrough past 2008 suggesting this was abandoned as a failure.

The &quotixie dust" was tested and found it wasn't what the claims said it was.
"The powder was mostly collagen and a variety of substances, without any pig cells, said Dr Stephen Badylak, a regeneration researcher at the University of Pittsburgh and scientific adviser to ACell."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2008/may/01/finger.claim

Also if this treatment worked then why wasn't it used on the rest of him? Here's a resent interview with the soldier being treated.
You can see around 12:52 and 22:42 of the video he raises the hand they used the &quotixie dust" on and the finger is still missing.

And an image of him from a year later from the experiment, have a look at the hand holding the paper.
